Alternator Woes?
Hopefully one of the many geniuses here can answer this.
Monday I drive the shark to work, and there is nothing unsual along the way, a friend and I go to lunch in the shark, and when we come out of the restaurant.....there isn't enough juice in the battery to start it. I get a jump and watch the voltmeter in the dash on the way back to work approximately 6 miles. The meter reads somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 volts @ 2000 rpm.
I charge and check the battery, there is no evidence of a problem there. Every time I drive it I disconnect the battery so it doesn't discharge. It cranks up fine but the meter in the dash never registers over 12 volts. I am assuming the alternator has a problem.
The belt is fine as well as the belt tension. All ground points have been cleaned as well as battery connections. Does this point to the alternator or maybe just a voltage regulator?
Also, since I am a new owner I am unsure of the type of alternator on my shark, if it has the cooling hose does that mean it is a Bosch?
The placement of the alternator on the 928 is a bit mysterious IMHO.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Mitch,
Sounds like it could be the alternator. Here's a link to an alternator test procedure I put together:

There was also a pretty exhaustive thread about a month or so ago on alternator trouble shooting that might be worth searching the archives for.
