Red face Chattering Wiper Blades

Really enjoyed the romp between Nashville and Atlanta in the shark this week. 239 miles in a bit over 3 hours. Good times. Car just loves to go and go. I did not bring any tools. Just lucky?

The only problem was the driver side wiper chattering during a brief rainstorm. The chattering is not so bad but on the return sweep the blade was smacking the windshield. These are the GTS blades with that leads edge. Left a mark in the glass. Not good.

Anyway, what is up with the chattering? What causes it? I cleaned the windshield before the trip. Also, even when I sprayed windshield washing fluid it still chattered. These are nearly wiper refills. I am tempted to find the old blades and use them. Is this the wiper arms, blades or the residue on the windshield?

How snug should the wiper blade be on the wiper arm? Mine are really loose.

Any suggestions?

Hi…,

Wipers should pivot smoothly, without wobble, at connection point with arms. Base of blades should have nut tightened securely onto oscillating shaft. Blades should be fresh rubber. Window should be polished. See my 2 cents worth on polishing below:

Glass Polishing:

STEPS:
1. thoroughly wash the windows
2. cleaner like Windex
3. Duragloss NuGlass to polish out the water marks
4. Rainx “The Invisible Windshield Wiper” or interchangeable product on the outside glass
5. Rainx “anti fog” on the inside

I polished all of my windows with excellent results. Here is what I found. Rainx products are great. I tried “The Invisible Windshield Wiper” on my water marks. It would not cut them. I then used the Duragloss NuGlass to polish out the water marks. It was pretty ease to apply and remove. I hope to not need to remove water marks again for a long time. I then used “The Invisible Windshield Wiper” on the outside glass. I called the Rainx rep. He said that this product is interchangeable with their “Windshield Wax.” There are a few more Rainx products that are probably interchangeable too. I used NuGlass, then Rainx “anti fog” on the inside. The results are phenomenal. I rode around in the rain for a long time without even needing to use the windshield wipers. The water just beads up and rolls away. For the next touchup, I hope to just use a Rainx exterior product. Of course, I would thoroughly wash the windows, then use a cleaner like Windex before I would use the Rainx.

Windshield wiper chatter can sometimes be reduced by carefully tightening every joint on the blade. You want slippage, but not looseness.

I think I have the chattering solved. There really is excessive play where the wiper attaches to the wiper arm. This is even the case on my '85, too.

My mechanic, Joel Roeder, had a box of the plastic 'U' joints of every imaginable size. He found a pair of them that when used reduced the free play enough to get the wiper blades to behave.

Tested a bit with success. We'll see.
