Air Box Bungee Cord

Air Box Bungee Cord
Hey evryone. This is my first post on the forum. Just picked up my first shark. It is a 81 auto. While going over the engine compartment I noticed that I had only one rubber band holding my air filter cover on. Well a couple of days later it let go too. I made some calls to the usual parts suppliers and was blown away by the price of these things. $26.00 ea. I am not wealthy so I started searching for a low buck fix. I went to my local Napa auto parts and looked around the shelves. To my good fortune I found a replacement part that is identical to the stock rubber bands and it only cost me $3.50 for two of them. I purchased a bag of tire chain tensioners for a passanger car. Took the steel hooks off and they fit perfectly. I know this is probably the only time I can get away with a cheap replacement like this but it makes me feel like I got away with a little something. Sorry about being so long winded. Later

That seems like a great fix. I know many owners are short 1 or more hold down straps for the air box. Mind sharing where you bought the straps, web addy, phone number etc...
Hopefully you don't mind posting a pic of the straps on and off the shark.
TIA
John D.

At the DEVEK days gathering early this month, one of the cars on display had a set of aftermarket rubber straps from a 911 or some other variant. Apparently they cost a fraction of what the OEM 928 straps cost, work fine, come in many colors, etc. I'll post a question on the SoCal board and also on Phil's board and see if anybody has the specifics.

Welcome Jim.
Great tip for a part that has always aggravated 928 owners due to the cost for such a simple piece of rubber.
Post a pic.

Hi guys. Here is what info I have on the replacement rubber bands. As stated in my first post I purchased them at the local Napa in my town.
the stock # on the bag is QG20070. The name of the product as printed on the bag is TIRE CHAIN TIGHTENER FOR PASSENGER CARS. They are from Security Chain Co. out of Portland Oregon. There is a larger diameter rubber available ( for trucks) but it looked like it would not fit into the little keepers on the air box. I am sure any auto parts supplier that carries tire chains will carry chain tighteners. Hope this helps.
