Default How can you tell if 928 is an S model?

I know this is a dumb question, but are there any easy ways of telling? I have an 1982 manual shift. It has a chin spoiler and what I believe to be one of Carl's spoilers and rocker kits. I don't know this car looked like originally, so I am not sure. I have always assumed that it wasn't an S, but have never been positive.
Thanks for any help,

Do a search for engine series codes here - IIRC M28/11 and /12 are S for Auto and Manual. Lower /nn numbers are non-S.

I have an 82 manual with the competition package (S). I do not believe they used the S designation until 83 models. Other than spoilers, gold colored man hole rims, and sport shocks I'm not sure there is anything to tell them apart. If you have the original owners documentation there should be a piece of paper or stick that lists the option codes. On later cars there was a sticker under the mat in the hatch area.

It is pretty common for non "S" 928's to have the "S" spoilers added..... technically they did not officially make the "S" model until 1983 in the USA

I guess I should be asking about the Competition Package. What are the differences there?

S spoilers brakes wheels everything except the most important part....the 300 HP 4.7 liter Euro S engine...It was not until 1985 that the USA car deserved to be badged as an S !

Only real way to tell if 928 is S or not is to check its VIN. Engine can be changed fairly easily but VIN change is very rare. In US cars its really simple, if car is '83 or younger its S. In ROW cars '80 to '82 MY can be either 4.5L or S and in these VIN is the key too.

The big difference is if it is Euro/ROW, or US spec car.

with your year model:

if it is a Euro/ROW, you are more likely to have an "S" with the M28/11 or M28/12 300hp engine.

with the US spec car, you can go by what Jim Bailey said........

I am under the impression there is a difference in the pre 83 US cars.

I had an 82 that had bigger brakes and Bilstein shocks from the factory. Not sure it came with a spoiler, but I am pretty sure it came with the bigger brakes. There was a sports package offered as well with sports seats and other things.

All '82 MY cars have S brakes, even US model. ROW 4.5L got these larger brakes in middle of '80 MY.
