What's the trick to Changing the starter
I'm in the process of changing the starter but it is blocked from being taken off. How do you get it off? Do you have to remove something else also?

I am guessing the sway bar is in your way? It will come out, I think some have had to loosen the sway bar but I have never had to, it's a tight fit.

If the top allan head bolt is out and the starter hasn't dropped , rap the case with a soft faced hammer - it may be stuck by corrosion ( a ring of white aluminium oxide) in the bell housing opening. On one car, I had to work it back & forth with a pry bar and hammer.
Often, the clutch hydraulic line has to be loosened too.

Careful what you use for leverage if you have to pry!
I had to loosen the clutch line (to let it hang out of the way) between the slave and master on mine, '88 S4, and one bolt was really hard to get to but it came out.

the starter will come out easier if you remove the both sides of the sway bar mounts to chassis. it might also be stuck in the metal housing , if you do pry on the top of the starter be very careful as you can easily pry hard enough to crack your oil pan, better to tap the starter from the sides with a piece of wood and hammer after spraying the mount with PB or Kroil, now is a good time to check the motor mountsthe oil pan should be flush or just above flush with the crossmember

In '82 MY starter is still mounted directly to clutch cover and not into separate cast piece. IIRR its fairly easy to lower the cover while starter is still mounted to it and gain better access to its bolts.
