I live 50 miles from a race track. I've driven my 928GT at 145 mph. I have taken 90 degree turns at speeds that other cars would flip over. All these thing I've done LEGALLY. They were all done as safely as possible. Everyone who was there with me was aware of what I was doing, and fully supported it. They even signed insurance waivers to the effect of holding the Club, participants, and the track-owner harmless.

I don't need to prove my car is fast on the street. Anyone who needs to prove that, is really in need of serious therapy. Just ask any Cop or Trafic court judge if they think street racing is wise or prudent.

So what your saying, is, basically, porsche makes the 911, and then on the side porsche makes brown mushy SCHIT and sells it to people who are suckers?
They make disaster POS cars just to make some extra money, and they basically SUCK at making any other cars because they are so **** 911 oriented?
That says a lot about what kind of business porsche is does it not? that thye don't really have any skill in making any other car than a rear engine flat 6?

PeteAir,

I have NONE of the problems you describe, I did have to replace a power steering line a month ago however.
When I talk to Porsche mechanics around Portland OR their opinions are 928's don't break, built like tanks. Driving a 911 I'm sure you have a mechanic, you should ask him about it.

The point is I don't need a tow vehicle. Porsche stressed throughout its existence, that I can drive a Porsche to the track, on the track, then home from the track. I enjoy driving my Porsche everyday. I enjoy it at low speeds as well as high speeds. I enjoy it while taking a curve at regular speeds, or three times regular speeds. I enjoy it while braking normally, and while braking at the limits. No other car I've driven gives me so much enjoyment regardless of the speed I'm doing.

ya but come on.....a track car needs to be preserved so that you don't waste it up before you get to the track! the piston rings wear down!! the engine gets older!!

I never saw Schumacher drive is ferrari to the track!

Dear Lars:
Ir sounds like you have not been tot very many (if any) PCA Driver's Ed events. I can tell you from over 11 years of experience (which is really not much) that the vast majority of Driver's Ed participants drive their Porsche to the track (sometimes over 1000 miles from home) then drive their Porsche on the track, then drive home.

All 928 owners should be aware of the DEVEK "While Car". Marc and Susan Thomas have driven that car for thousands of miles to participate in several closed road courses. The "Silver State Classic" and "Big Ben" are just two that I'm aware. They've been featured in Excellence, Hot Rod Magazine, and Panorama just to name a few.

As Porsche used to advertise, "Every Porsche made is a race car". How you care to use yours is a personal matter. I prefer to use mine as a daily commuter, that on occasion becomes a high performance vehicle. I know others who have made their Porsches dedicated track cars. I would not do that, but since it's not my car, my opinion does not matter. Along those lines, you can claim that only dedicated race cars belong on a track. Fortunately, thousands of PCA members (like me) and race track owners, don't agree with you.

ok ed, i'm not gonna say anymore...i now see that the only reson to drive a porsche on the road is either to break the law and every so often get a speeding ticket, or in many cases, just drive one around cuz you like to show it off and waste up some miles that could have been put into the track.
There can't be any other reason to drive it on the road other than to show it off, if you are obeying the law.
cuz when you floor it in a 928, at low speeds, its not goin fast, its a cruiser, it isn't meant to be on a USA road its meant to be on a road with now speed limits in europe, i think.

Whatever. You believe what you want. I'll believe what I want. IMO, (which matters to me more than your opinion) a 928 is great at any speed. Heck, I like just looking at it in my driveway. I like driving it, at the speed limit, to the grocery store. I like driving it at 145 mph on the track too. I like it when I take a turn right at the limits. I like it when I can steer with the throttle.

I suspect that everyone who owns a performance car (be it Corvette, Mustang, BMW, Ferrari, or whatever) has their reasons for liking it. If your reasons are for speed only, then you may have bought the wrong car. There are far less expensive cars than Porsches that can be driven faster.

Fortunately, most PCA members have many reasons for liking their Porsche(s), and every one of them probably couldn't care less what others like you think.

I was just curious what sort of 0-60 an 1/4 mile times you have Carlos. You see, I keep seeing the 996 quoted as 4.6 0-60 and a 13.2sec 1/4 mile at 107 MPH. However, I must say Porsche only claims a 5.2sec 0-60. These are with the MT, of course.
