Default What could you swap?

If you where to 2 cars up on ramps next to each other, a '78 and a '95, and a bunch of tools, what parts could you swap directly between the cars without modification?
(Or in other words what parts stayed the same throughout the 928 production?)

To start:
1. Rear lower suspension arms
2. Pedal rubbers

you could swap pretty much everything off one tub to the other, even the front fenders and bumper covers.

this thread is here why? Why would you put 78 model parts on a GTS? and why would you ruin a GTS to put parts on a 78?

A more interesting question would be what couldnt you swap?

I think the vast majority of parts would swap across no problem assuming both cars have the same transmission....

BUT why would you....you would have to strip both cars down to the bare frame......pulling everything to make it work....all wiring...everything....it would be a mountain or work.....

Lets say the 95 was wrecked.......it would be far easier to find at least a 91 or newer S4 to do the swap....since most the wiring is the same....

Transmission and TT's would have to be swapped in pairs, with the addition of the third member cross frame support. The early OB's have a different position than all the later ones.

Anyone want to correct this statement?

If you had a mechanically sound GTS that needed a complete cosmetic makeover, I think it would be kind of neat to make it look like an OB - down to a Pascha interior. The performance would sure would surprise a lot of experts who didn't know what it was. You could always restore the GTS cosmetics at some later date.

What I was really asking was;

Which parts stayed the same throughout the life of the 928?

I wasn't suggesting that you converted a '78 into a '95 or visa versa!

I doubt that many parts did stay the same, which is different to those that could be swapped even though they evolved.

I hope I never get to see anything that looks like your avatar... Congrats on the rebuild!

More interesting question for me would be if you had a wrecked GTS then what would you use to upgrade a 78?
I would take the front brakes, the manual gearbox and the block; not the heads.

The rear arms are not the same just similar, they will bolt on. And the rear bumper covers do NOT fit unless you heavily modify the tub. Many parts swaps have a domino effect where it might FIT but to function requires changing many other parts as well. Very very few parts stayed the same 78-95 maybe the sunvisor clips ? Possibly hand brake assembly.

TT, gearbox and rear subframe changes over the years are fairly comples but many combinations can be made to work. There are basically two really different rear subframe setups, all automatics and G28/03 manual gearbox vs. G28/05 manual and later manual boxes. If both '78 and '95 are automatics, rear subframes would work with little work. Difference between first and last automatic subframe versions is dual exhaust mounting points. '95 version still has mounting points cast in it for gearbox shocks used only in '78 MY cars.

AFAIK rear suspension arms are similar. What was changed was to what front end of lower arm is mounted to, directly to body vs. cast aluminum mount. Hand brake handle was change in '91 MY.
