Unhappy HELP! Fuel Leak

Interesting thing happened on my last fillup. As the fuel reached the end of filling, I noticed it beginning to "pour" to the ground, and continuing to do so as I and the attendant looked in amazement. I signed the credit card receipt and quickly checked to make sure that the fuel had not come from an overflow at the pump nozzle (it did not). Having no way to siphon of the fuel, I decided to drive my 82 around the country side for about a half hour (to use up some fuel); the leak stopped. I suspect a hole or crack at the top of the gas tank filler neck. Anyone with a similar experience or ideas on finding/correcting this problem? The cheap fix I suppose is not to fill up completely.
Thanks!
Rich

I'm glad you mentioned your model year Rich as it helps in making a diagnosis.

I'm guessing that the fuel tank vent hose has finally rotted away at the tank connection. I have a similar problem with my '79 that I have yet to fix, although on mine the break in the vent line is higher so that it results in excess fumes and a bit of a gas drip when the tank is completely full.

To replace the hose the entire tank assembly must be removed - look to Greg Nicols Tips site or the 928 OC site for directions on fuel tank R&R.

It could also be a cracked fuel tank (it's made of plastic), though they tend to crack mostly at the bottom along the support strap channel. In the event that it is a cracked tank near the top, it can be repaired fairly reliably using Marine Tex epoxy or similar.

This should be a simple fix for you (hopefully).

More than likely the cap nut to hold down the fuel sender broke. Once this breaks the full leaks out when "topped" off. It's also possible that it's slightly loose!!

This is really easy to check:
1) Open the rear hatch and pull up the carpeting.
2) On the (passenger) side, opposite the battery (trap) door, look for a circular rubber cover.
3) Pull this rubber cover off and look below.
4) You are looking at the top of the fuel tank and the fuel sending unit....it's held on by THE cap nut.

See if the cap nut is broken. It has to be VERY tight so "looseness" will be hard to verify. Next to the sending unit there is a small recess in the fuel tank. If you check this soon there could still be gas in the "recess" to help you identify if this is the culprit.

Another hint....if this cap nut is the problem the inside of the car will usually smell like gas after the fill-up!!

$10 will buy you a new cap nut. This is the simplest fix....from here it gets harder and more expensive!!

Good Luck!!
