Fuel pump relay and getting stranded
Here is a quick tip. If you car quits or won't start and you suspect the fuel pump relay simply jump terminals 30 and 87 with a short piece of wire with a spade connector on each end. While I wouldn't leave it this way for an extended period of time it will get you going in a pinch. In fact it wouldn't hurt to keep this little item in your bag of tricks for trouble shooting other relay induced gremlins

Great site! Does this 30-87 relay strap work for late model 944's ? Photo of the 928 relay looks a bit different but my old (faulty) DME/fuel pump relay does have pins 30 & 87 !

Had a fuel pump failure just after purchase of my 1990 928 S4 in Feb 2000 and had to jump the relay with some wire whilst fault finding by the side of the road.
Have made up the same jumper lead with spade pieces.
Just goes to show Porsche owners think alike.

I just swap the twin horn relay for the fuel pump relay. The panel has about four relays that are identical. Take your pick, just don't use the one for the starter. YMMV.

Good tip, as is swapping with another like-kind relay.
Check out the relay chart at 928 Specialists to determine the relay configuration for each model year:

I say you just have to luv Rennlist!!!
Been on vacation for the past few months and pulled the shark out of storage yesterday and he started right up...this morning I made it about 30 feet and the car just died...as if running out of fuel. First thing that came to mind was not hearing any noise from the fuel pump...checked archives and sure enough...so...with that information, I jumped the fuel relay (with a piece of coat hanger cuz I failed to mke up the neat little jumper per everyones advise) and the car started right up...swapped out the horn relay and I'm off and running...guess I'm buying a few extra relays just incase for next time.
Again, thanks everyone for sharing your knowledge.

Yes .........relay , relay , relay ....... how something so small and inexpensive stops the whole show .......later model cars can borrow relays from the horn circuit .
