If you want to take the top cover off you will need to remove the side spring mechanism located just below the cover on the side. It has the 2 6mm (10mm socket) bolts.

Mark-

And when I do that, what will fall irreparably into the bowels of the case, necessitating a complete rebuild?

Was it also oily inside that selector joint protection thing? If yes then problem is that seal. If top gasket is leaking I would expect diff top to be oily too and front end of box to be little less.

In any case it would be extrmely stupid not to open up top and diff covers while at it. Have a good look around. As Mark says you just need to remove that one small piece on side and spring behind it. There is one other spring under top cover but it will stay on its place as long as box is upright. If you need to change few seals its cheaper just to get entire seal kit anyway and you might as well change both cover gaskets too.

Erkka-

The input selector bellows is dry, so I think the input selector shaft bushing is ok. The diff cover may not look so bad in the pic above, but I had already scraped a layer of crap off of it when I changed the gearbox oil last summer. I'll order up some gaskets and get them changed out.

Rob that thing is a beauty!

You did that with a steam cleaner? I really need to get one of those, cause a pressure washer and detergents and oil cleaner solutions never get all the grime off. The bolts on your case look brand new! Whats the model of your Steamer again, and what would you say is a good target price for them?

If i had one of those steamers i would spend the day cleaning the underside of the car. The results are amazing.

I have the top seal and the breather, but as mentioned i wanted to do this exact same thing and do a basic reseal of the transaxle. Nothing is wrong with mine, its just a bloody mess, mine looks exactly like yours Rob.

What does the seal kit cost? can someone provide the PN for the case seal kit for a 90 GT.

Ryan-

The steamer is a Daimer 200S:

http://www.daimer.com/shop/item/137-...117440519.html

The complete tranny seal kit is 928.300.901.01 and is ~$150 at 928GT. I really don't want to do anything more than the easily accessed seals, so here's what I ordered:

$4.34 transmission top cover gasket 928.301.393.07
$8.15 tranny selector shaft seal 928.303.120.01
$1.78 diff cover gasket 928.301.395.03
$23.60 tranny input shaft seal 928.302.167.03

There's probably more to do for a proper re-seal, I'm sure/I hope Erkka will chime in!

Rob,

There is a breather at the top cover, I was told to replace it as that can also leak, its another $5 or so.
