UPDATE - Robert still has no oil pressure.
I just talked him through joining Rennlist so later today he will post his own comments.
He replaced the oil pump seals and primed with oil and STP.
Visually everything looks good.

He checked the oil regulator and found no piston and springs above the pressure sender.
Replaced those and still no pressure.

Still gets a red light for no oil pressure and no reading so assume the sender is OK.

He is about to put a stick of dynomite in there - he needs some help.

Please could the engine boffins re-read the thread and offer some suggestions?
Maybe we are missing something simple here.
Thanks,
Roger

Has he done all the things suggested? We don't know where he's at. I guess once he gets on, we'll have a go.

Roger, "He checked the oil regulator and found no piston and springs above the pressure sender. Replaced those and still no pressure." .. does that mean there was no pressure valve and he installed one?

H,
Yes there was no piston and the upper and lower springs.
Never has been by the sound of it. However the engine was running without them before.
I went to get him a set from an 84 I have and there was non in there either - go fugure.
We put a new set in thinking this may solve the problem but still no pressure.

He has done everything suggested.

At this point, it seems he has run the motor without oil more than I'd be comfortable with ... Roger I'd recommend powering the car, and turning the pump by drill from now-on till he has pressure. No more cranking.

Roger, let's look at the problem statement, because it is likely that our answer lies in it:

"He removed the oil pan, screen and the bottom portion of the oil pickup to replace the oil pan gasket. Engine ran fine before and had normal levels of oil pressure.
After reassembly and cranking without the fuel pump he is getting no oil pressure on his guage and the low oil pressure red light on the dash comes on."

If 100& correct, and if there wasn't other work also done ... then ....

There is a clog in the pickup or oil system like a cloth, or
The pickup isn't sealing right

I see no way around this .... he needs to check the pickup, and the entire oil path. He needs to run the oil pump with a drill, and check if he gets suction at the pickup...

H,
I agree that he does not want to crank the engine any more.
Let's let Robert post his comments and go from there.

Ah ..."I went to get him a set from an 84 I have and there was non in there either - go fugure.".... The cars without oil coolers in the radiator do not have the piston and springs since there is no place to direct the oil when it gets hot to cool it. No cooler ... no oil thermostat.

Roger,

Has he checked the clearance between the bottom of the pickup and the bottom of the pan? Where in FL is this fellow?

I need to know if he spun the oil pump shaft with a drill motor to pressurise the oil system with the belt off. He needs to remove the thermostate spring and piston. Need more info........

On my 78's there are two brass hex plugs. One for the oil cooler temp switch and one for the oil pressure relief valve. Could he be looking at the wrong plug?

No problem Roger, just takes 16 years or so experience .... I still learn something new about 928s all the time ! Like the sampling tube on the 85-86 you can eliminate just by inserting a ball bearing and cutting of the pipe use the old nut to seal. Saves buying an expensive 928 solid plug...
