Arrow Pictures of the Sway Bar Mount Reinforcement

After doing some work on my exhaust last week, Jim V and noticed a crack in my sway bar mount under the bolt. Don Hanson had the same problem and sent me pictures showing how he reiforced and repaired the mounts on his car. If you would like to see the repair leave a note here and I will email them to you directly.

Thanks for the pictures. I would just caution anyone who has welding done on any car. Disconnect the cars computers. ABS, LH, EZK and anything else you can get your hands on to disconnect.
This is in addition to removing the battery leads.

ABS John? That is the first I heard that. Is there the possiblity of damaging this system too when welding on the vehicle?

I know Don Hanson blew out his ABS/PSD computer on his GT when his roll cage was welded in.
Actually Kim Crumb has mentioned disconnectiong all computer equipment on the 928. Took him a good hour to do.

Wink

Thanks John, i was totally unaware that that needed to be done. I don't have ABS on my 85S but, the precaution of disconnecting "all the electronics" (in addition to the usual computer modules I disconnect) is noted and I will take those precautions the next time I weld on my car.

By the way "Jim Hurrt" are you out there? If Stuttgart is going to do your car they need i need to send my car in about the same time you do your so they can do them simultaneously? Lets get together on when we can send out cars in at the same time. I would like to mine before "Sharks in the Mountains".

Question

John, I forgot to ask- Other than the ones you mentioned above, what other electrical systems are there to disconnect? I don't want to miss any.

There is some excellent advice given by everyone. Let me add just one more if I can. I suspect that the original break of the bar mounts was caused by loose bolts. The mounts should not break unless they came in contact with something hard, a possibility because of their location. It is always an excllent idea to check all mounts and mounting hardware for specified torque settings whenever changing oil, etc. Loose bar mounts can break the area around the bolts!
Great motoring everyone!

Cool

Come in contact with something,,,"HARD "? Hmmm, I am pretty sure that was not the case with mine and I am pretty positive those bolts were torqued down properly.

Sory I didn't respond sooner Pat. Mine was done Tues. They did a nice job and are good guys to work with. Saw 3 different 928's while I was there. They were very impressed that I did my own motor mount, oil pan blah blah job. Where are you at with your mounts?
By the way my mount did not come into contact with any thing and was torqued.

No problem Jim,,, I got really busy during the week so. it is not likely that i would have an opportuntiy to get my car there anyway. My BMW was in the shop most of last week. For friggi'n tires ! Can you be believe that? I caught a high speed flat on I-5 last week Friday and my spare was flat too (brand new car go figure)! Anyway it took Kuni BMW 5 days to get a set of new tires for me and even then I got "tired" of waiting for the Bridgstone Potenza RE730's and decided to go and buy a set of Kumho 17" ECSTA Supra 712's. Hey, I compared specs on the Kumho and the Bridgestone's and they are DARN CLOSE in everything- performace, wear, wet & dry traction, etc....with one exception, the Kumhos are about $60-70 cheaper each!

Glad it took Kuni 5 days to get a set of tires, they saved me a bunch of cash.

I have been driving on them these past few days and the Kumho makes a good product. I think I am going to stick with this line of tires for my 928 too.
