Post Ignition Wires

Have any of you guys found wires to fit our
cars other than the Porsche or Nology?
I'm thinking MSD or Accel type aftermarket
cut to fit with the proper boots/terminals.
The car in question is a 16 V, it's got the
jacob's wires on it now (PO) and I suppose
the wires are OK but the terminals are junk.

Hey, you might checkout Magnecor for some wires for that Shark of yours. Available at reasonable prices.

If you need more info, let me know.

You might try calling Jacobs - their wires are supposed to have a lifetime warranty (or perhaps the PO can call them??) I just ordered some for my '82 5-spd and they seemed very helpful.

Question

Well, Jim I would find it hard to beleive that upgrading the wires has any performance value. I think another question to aske is- Are there any dynoed before (without) and after (with) Nology wires, etc.

More to the point, how about a dyno comparison of the Nology wires against new stock wires.

Jay,
I just surfed their website last night and
these are what I'm looking for, they did not have a P/N for the 928 sets so I dropped them
an E-mail.
If you know of someone who carries the 928
set or a p/n it would be most helpful.
Thanks,
Jim V

Pat,Curt,RD,

I'm not expecting a performance gain from new
wire, but rather better quality and reliability.
The Jacobs wires keep popping loose at the
distributer and the terminals are not seating
on the posts properly;alot of arcing going on in there.I want to get something better
before I install a new cap and ruin it .
The stock wires are probably OK but as I understand I'll have to re-use or replace all
the resistor ends and even if they all ohm out good they are still 22 years old and could be a source of problems.
I think Louie is using the Magnecores and look at all the power he makes

Jim-

I got this info from another rennlister - I have the email archived at home - which is not where I'm at right now (work....). That being said seems like I remember a 5 digit number and the wires are blue 8 mm wires...something 80 I think. About $200 a set dropped at your door step.

I'll post part number in the morning when I get home.

I looked up Magnecor wires for my 86.5 a while back. I had to research through their PDF catalog to find what I wanted.

8.5mm wires are PN 85217 and at the time cost 293.34 a set.

8mm wires would go by the number of 80217...

Thumbs up

Pat, Curt, et al, I'm currently running the Nologys, and would really like to see back/back dyno comparisons over stock, but I can tell you that after swapping wires the car idled much smoother.(yes that could've just been the bad old wires) The car also seemed to rev a little quicker. Also for 10 bucks more than the price of new Beru wires, I had to say WTF, if it doesn't help I'm only out 10 bucks.

I agree, I got the same effect by installing a fresh stock wireset on my ex-'87. It's not the $10 difference that interests me, just whether there's really any quantifiable difference between the various products. Of course, if I really care, I should try it on my car in its current state of tune for a test that's useful to me....

I'm far from an expert on plug wires but I'd find it hard to believe they make a substantial difference in performance. That said, I think I'm going for the Nology wires..as Chris said, the dollar difference is negligble, maybe they are better, but they also look good..I'm jealous of those fine looking engine compartments I saw at SITM!

When someone does this test (hopefully with dyno results), can they also compare using different plugs (platinum+4, copper, or even the silver ones) with the hotter wires. I noticed that the main suppliers have the OEM wires for around ~300 (85S and newer) and the hotwires are about the same. One of them had an eceonomy set for $150. Has anyone tried the silverstone plugs?

I discussed this topic with my mechanic (who was the chief wrench for a team that ran at Daytona) and he said thqat good wires are good wires. We talked about the different types, and for the money he said the Jacobs for $135 are as good as any.

I installed them a month later, and nearly two years later, I haven't had any problems with them. The only inconveniences were that they didn't come pre-loomed (it took an extra hour to set up the looms and drill out the wiring holders. Jacobs wires are 8mm while OEM are 7mm) and the connectors to the plugs are not as nice and firm as the OEM (but so far they have not come undone). YMMV.
