Take it to a restoration shop (or call a good body shop) and ask them if they can put an ozone generator in it for a few hours. I had it done after i set the contents of my truck bed on fire once (long story) and the smoke got inside the cab. After I got it back I had no smell of smoke again. Even on humid warm days. It was truly amazing because I drove the truck to the body shop after it happened and I could hardly stand the smell.

Was it valet parked at one time? Jerry Seinfeld had a huge problem with that one time.

If the smell is a moldy or OLD smell you should lift every carpet and see if there is either rust or mold growing under the floormats. Pay carful attention to the passenger foot well this is a known leak area , water will drip down the blower box and drip onto the CE panel to check this just get a light and look up under the dash looking for tell tale drip marks. Also check the spare tire well, as this could be housing some old chemicals stored there and open the battery box, there might be corrosion in it

I had a thread on here, maybe a couple years ago, about an unpleasant smell in my car.
I really believe it was simply old, entrenched human body odor from the PO. People will take their 928 to go work out, get all sweaty, then just climb back in and head home. Over the years, the steady accumulation of sweat and pheromones (you can look 'em up!) can be pretty deadly.
I solved my issues when I completely replaced the carpet kit and the leather on the front seats. Plus I went over the rear seats with a quality leather cleaner and conditioner a few times.
I also cleaned the steering wheel leather very thoroughly - where we all deposit skin sweat and oils from just gripping the wheel - as well as the top of the center console storage bin - where most of us probably rest our right arm a lot.
Now, doing all that didn't exactly confer a "new car" smell, but the interior currently has a rather pleasing "fine old leather" bouquet!

I believe that "smell" is typically the carpet backing and adhesive breaking down. My '79 had this musty odor also -- until (like Bigs) I replaced my old carpet and various leather components. During the carpet install, I noticed even the backing on my new silverknit smells kind of bad if you get close to it.
A contributor to the smell may also be due to a non functioning HVAC. No HVAC means no way to remove the humidity inside the car -- if this persists for a while a musty smell can develop. I noticed that you are in Alabama per your signature, so humidity is definately a problem - even in the winter.

This is very true. My friend Scott always drove home to shower after a work out. He kept his car clean but, it always had a old sock smell. One night we are out at a bar and he finally gets this girl he has been after to go out with him. We decide to go to perkins for some late night food, he opens the door for her to get in and i'll never forget her words " Damn, it smells like *** in here!" Needless to say he always showered at the gym after that night.
