Default idle speed adjuster hoses

The weather has been nice (relatively for this part of the world in Dec) so I managed to get out to the car and complete the intake removal project.

The hoses on the idle speed adjuster did not have clamps on them and my version of PET shows they should...........indication it was worked before and not assembled proper?

The throttle valve has a crack/split in the lower rh quadrant..........I assume thats not correct?

The nest of hair and other 'stuff' is not OEM is it?

Other than that it looks in reasonably good shape.

I was in Calgary last summer. Even the Holiday Inn had elect outlets at the parking spaces for block heaters. Real purdy up there but I don't like NY winters let alone what you get.

I wonder if somebody was R&Ring the valve w/the intake in place? And if so, they probably were too lazy to deal with tightening clamps. How could it get cracked? If I had it off, I would just replace it and the rubber under there.

Now that I've cleaned up the 'V' etc I believe I'm looking at the inners for the first time since the factory.........interesting way they routed vac lines, wires etc. Kinda neat to see the valves and crank.

Atypical the 'knock' sensors fell apart in my hands.

I'm going with all new gaskets; all new hoses and vac lines............flappy is operating fine and I'll have the injectors 'done'............now what else?

Nope. No clamps on the hoses at the ISV. I dunno why. I've thought about adding some. But, I've never seen an ISV with clamps as shown in PET.

I just browsed my OC tech procedure and I didn't include a picture of the t-body side of the intake. However, just to make sure I'm not insane I looked through ALL the pictures I took for the write-up and nope: no clamps. I'm not insane.

I'm not sure what you mean. Got a pic?

Other non-OEM stuff that may be found in the engine valley are:
Down and/or Poly-Fill from pollows
Husks from nuts
Cig butts
Leafs
Twine

Heh - that could be a thread: "What have YOU found under your intake."

I assume that you found the 10mm-head fuel rail bolt that dropped down there?

Clean the LH harness grounds back there. One under the throttle cable pulley and one on the other side of the valley. I posted pictures of these a while back in some thread somewhere.

I assume your doing the filler neck and water bridge.

Electrically test your idle/wot switch. (Or better yet - round-file it and buy a new one. Or, you'll have to go in there next year to replace it. BTDT)

thx Dave..........I was following the OC tech procedure and didn't see a pic of the hoses........appreciate the clarification

yes..........perhaps it sucked in a bird?

was enough crap down there to nest a few families of rodents........the fuel rails have bolts; uh oh

That would be a curiously-shaped bird to which only the Laws of Cartoon Physics applied

All is normal. That cut-out is normal. Don't ask me why. The air-pump diverter valve's vacuum port is behind it. Maybe it has something to do with that.

I wonder if it acts to provide some air at idle.........ie. it flexes enough allowing a small stream of air when the throttle is closed.

As I no longer have the air pump or the diverter valve I'm going to plug the vacuum port.

Appreciate the advice Dave.

Nope..........forget the above; closer inspection of the throttle body shows the idle air path which of course goes through the ISV.

I still like to understand why there's that cut away in the throttle plate........anyone? (in old carb technology its almost akin to the carb slide cut away.)

Just got a 928 S4...'87 model...

What RPM are these cars supposed to idle at? I think mine is idling a little low...somewhere around 500 RPM...

Also, where is the idle adjustment located???

Thanks

There is no idle adjustment for S4's onward. Auto's and sticks have different specs. My GT idles perfectly at 750 R's which is spec. I think auto's are in the 825 range?

Idle Speed should be 675 +/- 25 rpm for all 87-91 S4s and all GTSs. GTs spec idle is 775 +/- 25.

Auto's drop idle by 50 rpm when put in gear but when in neutral or park the idle is the same as 5-speeds.

I may have an issue then. My car idles around 500, maybe a little less. It does, however, run fine.

If I was a bettin' man I'd say that the idle side of the WOT/Idle switch is dead and not telling the computer to activate idle speed control. So, test the idle side of the circuit at the LH and EZK plugs. It could also be a dead idle stabilizer valve - also testable from the ECU plugs.
