Default Steam ! Help !

Hi Folks,

Started the car this morning with no issues. Came back to go to work and I see a leak of water near the left front side of the car! Opened the hood to check any leaks and no apparent leaks from the radiator or any of the hoses. Checked underneath the coolant expansion tank and its hoses and no leaks there also.

However there was major steam leaking from the coolant expansion tank cap. It seemed steam and water had escaped from there. I had to fill the radiator to the full as there seemed to be minimal water. The cars temperature was not high and was stable while all this was happening (except the fan kept coming on more frequent).

I do know its a very old cap and hasn't been changed in the last 10 years or so from visual inspection. However just wanted advice from you guys as to what it could be? Do you think my old radiator cap needs replacing. My current one is rusted inside and the rubber ring has seen better days.

Help!

Thanks

PS. I haven't driven the car over 2 weeks however have periodically started it and left in park (remote start) to charge up the battery.

Syed--

The cooling system needs pretty regular attention to keep it in reasonable working condition. Fresh coolant every year (using the two-year coolant) or every two to three (using the five year coolant) is a must. Hoses have a useful life of perhaps ten years. Coolant reservoir caps are so cheap that they should be replaced at every major coolant service just to be on the safe side. You can buy one locally, or take advantage of the exchange rate buy getting a Genuine Behr original German cap shipped from 928 International. With shipping and duty it may still be cheaper than one locally sourced from Porsche in the UK.

Also--

Your technique of remote-starting the engine, and letting it idle for a while for battery maintenence is tough on the engine. Never gets up to temp enough to boil moisture oit of the oil. Drive the car to get it to full temp on the oil if you can. Then get a battery maintainer to keep everything charged between uses.

I had that happen and it was a temp sensor ... but if your fans come on, it is likely a good sensor and you need a better cap. Be SURE your water pump is not leaking.

Possible that the fans failed to come on as well. A faulty hood light "alarm" switch is all it takes.

It was in the way of the spark plug wrench anyway.
