Talking Help with a Vibration Problem

I HAVE STARTED THE PROCESS OF REPAIRING THE LIST OF THINGS I HAVE FOUND THAT NEED TO BE DONE TO MY NEWLY ACQUIRED 85' S AND HAVE A VIBRATION THAT IS REALLY BOTHERING ME BECAUSE OF THE THINGS THAT I KEEP READING ABOUT LOADING UP THE FLEX PLATE.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IS IF I AM AT A STAND STILL AND SLOWLY BRING THE RPM'S UP I CAN FEEL A VIBRATION COME ON AND STAY THERE. IT FEELS WORSE AT THE LOWERER RPMS. WHEN DRIVING YOU DON'T FEEL IT AS MUCH UNTIL YOU GET TO A CRUSING SPEED.

ALSO, I DON'T KNOW IF THIS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT, BUT WHEN IM TAKING OFF FROM A STANDSTILL THE CAR SEEMS TO LUG DOWN UNTIL IT HITS ABOUT 2800 RPM'S THEN IT REALLY STARTS TO PULL AND THE RPM'S COME ON MUCH FASTER.

I HAVE HAD A FELLOW 85' OWNER TELL ME ABOUT THE FLEX PLATE PROBLEM AND I HAVEN'T FOUND ANY ARTICLES YET THAT REALLY BREAKS DOWN WHAT I SHOULD TRY TO DO TO RESOLVE THIS. THE ONES I HAVE READ WERE A BIT CONFUSING.

IF ANYONE HAS ANY SUGGESTIONS OR IDEAS, I WOULD APPRECIATE IT.

THANKS,
DAVE

Dave,
I do not think the vibration has anything to do with the 'Flex Plate'
Check your:
- Engine (General check for vacuum leaks, compaction, sparking plugs etc.)
- Engine mount
Use the search facilities on Rennlist 928 Forum and consult the Shop Manual

Dave,

I agree with Erik with regards to the engine mounts. One test is to rev the engine while watching it and see if it rocks or moves on the mounts. If it moves, the mounts are at least somewhat good. My engine sits like a boulder and does not move at all. I need replacement mounts. I feel transient vibrations which are from the engine passing these vibrations through the frame.

Those who have replaced mounts have, for the most part, seen a tremendous improvement. You can also inspect the mounts from underneath and check for collapse. There's info in the archives about how to measure clearence with your finger.

Hey Greg and Eric,

That sounds great, I will check out the mounts today for sure. I'm happy to hear that it doesn't sound like the Flexplate problem. I guess since it is so new to me, I have been expecting the worst. As far as checking the manuals, I am making a call to 928 Specialist this morning to get them on order in preparation for the whole Timing belt Experience and now for the possiable motor mount replacement. I think once this vibration is solved and the Timing belt,Water pump, rebuilt Tensioner and Rollers are replaced I will be able to breath a lot easier.

Thanks for the help, The expertise and experience that you guys offer to newcomers to the 928 community such as myself is very much appreciated. Keep it coming.

Good news, I think. I took a look at the motor as I rev'ed her up and sure enough it didnt move, I could see the whole car try to flex. So, I guess I will go ahead and add motor mounts to the list and with the recent post regarding the Ford mounts I think I will try them first.

Thanks Again,

Dave
