Bought the 87 auto with the Strosek wide body kit (long)
I would like to thank all those who helped me along this journey especially Tarek and Shawn and Earl.
Last Wednesday I got a call that the car was still for sale, 87 928 auto 55k miles with a Strosek Ultra wide body kit. The seller lowered the price to $13k.
I had seen the link to autotrader from Rennlist and asked the seller about getting TB checked and do a leak down on the car along with 15 other things. I was told it was too expensive to have that done. I did get may pictures.
Decided to go and look at the car anyway, I like the looks of the kit and with 55K on the clock it didn't hurt. Made reservations Thursday to fly down Friday, told my wife I was flying down the next day to Florida to look at a 928 with a special wide body kit. Needless to say, she wasn't very happy with me. Who would have thunk it!
I put together a bunch of tools so I could get the inspection cover off and loosen the clinch bolt and check TB health. I was allowed to get the car up on a lift to inspect it. Asked the owner if I could check the crank movement and it would take an hour. He reluctantly said yes.
I fought for what seemed like an hour to get it off! Brought a hack saw blade, this didn't work well at all, hard bolts! Asked if I could borrow a sawzall and got we are a quality shop not a chop shop, no sawzall!
I was able to get both bolts undone but they wouldn't come out. Ended up removing the bolts at the manifold flange. Pulled slightly down on the cat and the cover came off with bolts, great! Measured the exposed shaft, and also noticed the flexplate had a significant bow (scared me). Released the bolt and the flex plate moved back 0.147 inches or 3.74mm. Earl said he saw one move back 10mm. The flexplate still has a slight flex. I also looked on the back side of the flywheel plate expecting to see the splined shaft coming thru, nope! My 88 has the splined shaft coming thru and I put the washers and clip on.
Why would an 88 have it while the 87 didn't? One must have had the torque tube replaced at some time.
Pulled out my dial indicator gauge (never used) to set it up. No plunger for the indicator! At this point I've had two other mechanics come over and tell me the shop owner is furious that I'm still on the lift? I should have asked him for a dial indicator – not!
Buttoned everything back up and got the car off the ramp. I was able to get another mechanic (Mercedes and BMW) to measure the crank end play (7.5 thousands), I was relieved. He also looked at the suspension and said it looked good, some slight wear. He was a great guy!
I bought it for $13k, it needs some TLC and parts, pretty much all the stuff I did with my car. It needs the dash, pod, and cassette cover recovered but rest of the interior is nice including the new Alpine stereo.
Timing belt and wp were changed 4 years and 4K miles ago, I will open it up, replace the belt and check everything else out. It has Bilstein shocks all around. MM are shot, needs wires, pan gasket, fuel lines, PS reservoir. AC is ok but needs work. Pasenger seat does not go for and aft.
The rims need work and I want to paint the center section to match the car.
Original color was cassis red but now black. I can live with the black paint and burgundy interior. If it needs repainting I may go with a different color. The paint needs work along with a few spots in the body. I will also pull the engine and paint the compartment. Some PO atempted to paint the engine compartment with a spray can. Lots of overspray!
Not fun when the fog on the windshield freezes, luckily the heater control valve was zip tied. Not fun at Midnight on a cold and rainy night. The heat sure did feel good! Let at 1pm and got home at 430am. Car drove great in the rain
The car is a good base to work from and unusual.
Now I need to sell my 88 and also get this one looking and running good!
The journey begins!
Attached are some pictures from the PO.

Glenn,
Congrats! Get the wife something real nice for Xmas- happy wife, happy life.
I considered going after this car a few weeks ago but I have too many irons in the fire already. It's great to see it go to a good home.
Merry Xmas,
Jim

Well done on a more that through PPI. Not many would go to that extent. I think you did very well and please keep us updated.

Congrats.
The seller and shop were very gracious. The moment you decided to start hacking on the car, you would have been handing me some money.

Really nice, and way to go on the PPI! My 86.5 is a resprayed black, originally garnet red, with a burgundy interior. Hate the respray (cheap M-yco) but really like the combination of black/burgundy. Torn between going back to the original paint or redoing the respray right. Have fun with yours!

edit: nevermind, went back and looked, that's probably the mounting strut, or whatever is holding it up.
