Powersteering pump pulley failure
While replacing my cam belt my mechanic found that the powersteering pump as leaking so the powersteering pump was replaced. I drove the car about 5 miles and I had no power steering. Looked under the hood and the pulley was not only loose but two of the three bolts holding it on were sheared off. Cut off the belt and limped back to the mechanic. The moral of the story is to replace the bolts holding on the pulley with new bolts when you install the water pump.

(Glad it wasn't a disaster. Also, you might want to check that the pulley is staight - especially after that little miscue - just start the car and blip the motor to about 3K. Look for any wobbling of the belt/pulley.)

I just wanted to add my recent experience to this thread. As I was driving around town the other day with the windows down, I noticed an unfamiliar whirring noise when sitting along side other cars at various stop lights. I assumed that it was coming from my car because I could hear it at every light and also when I passed other cars. It wasn't very loud, but it was constant and I believe it whirred faster as the rpm's rose. When I pulled in the driveway (probably an hour later) it was still there and maybe even a little louder. I left the car running and opened the hood. The noise seemed to be coming from behind the drivers side timing belt cover, but then I noticed my power steering pump pulley wobbling slightly. It is directly below the timing belt cover so that is why I thought the sound was coming from there. I turned off the engine and could see the bolts were loose. I pulled the car up on ramps and went in from underneath with a 10mm socket, short extention, and small socket wrench; didn't have to remove the large radiator hose. Anyway, all fixed.........luckily. If I would have gone any farther, I would have had a pulley whizzing around under the hood.
