Post Door Seal Replacement

Is it possible to replace the door seals without removing the doors from the body? Would I have to cut the new seals, or is there a trick to get them in and around the front or the doors?

Has anybody tried the cheapo seals from places like Vertex ($125/each)?

Thanks!

Nicole,
That's a relative easy job
Don't cut the seal!!! - You simply open the door stop and the flexible el-wire -covering - In font of these (under the dash board) there is an el-connector in each side.
Good luck!

if you have to cut it, do it at the bottom of the door. then us a little rubber tube or silicone to hold the ends together...

Nicole, It looks as if I have to get new seals too. It's just started raining here and when it starts raining in Scotland it really settles in for a good long run - it probably won't stop until February! Anyway both doors and the hatch are letting in water and there's nothing more motivating than squishy carpets.

I was wondering if anyone can point out the differences between the S and S4 seals? I know the S4 seals were meant to be improved by reducing leaks and road noise and have more lips and grooves, but do they fit in the same places or were there other changes that would mean I couldn't retrofit them to my S2?

Also within the door frame - is the narrow black strip that fits in between the roof lining/door pillars and the door frame a functional part of the sealing setup or simply a trim item (mine looks slightly chewed)?

Cheers

Ok, i've answered my own questions. The door seals for pre-S4 cars have been discontinued and replaced with S4 seals. The hatch seal is unchanged. And finally the beading strip between the headliner and frame is not a sealing component.

I have managed to find genuine porsche seals for £80 ($120) for each door and £60 ($90) for the hatch. Anyone got price comparisons? I think I checked prices direct from Porsche a couple of years ago and the door seals were about £300 ($450) each!

Cheers

Dave,
One year ago I got new seals for my doors - I bought them from Manfred Freisinger, Karlsruhe
Here you have the prices (almost the same as yours)
Doors: 220 DM (110 US$)
Hatch: 100 DM (50 US$)
To these comes the German sales tax 16%

Thanks, that's good to know Erik. I have ordered the seals and they should be here tomorrow.

As the 5spd's carpets were now quite wet I thought I would lift them out of the car and bring them inside to dry them out faster. But Yeuch! you wouldn't believe what a mess the fibrous backing is in. It looks like this leak must have been going for a while as it has rotted the backing away - just a nasty stringy mush left! It looks like new carpets have suddenly leapt higher up my to-do list.

Any pointers towards carpet kit suppliers would be apreciated. I was never particularly impressed with the standard carpets as they are very synthetic. Anyone out there had wool carpets fitted to their 928?

Cheers

i recall that someone posted that the GTS door seals were even better than the S4 door seals. redesigned to keep out the annoying little drips when opening the door after a car wash, or rain...

GTS door seals are better in that they have a lip that prevents water dripping on the interior when you open the door after it has been raining. It also makes the door shut with a muted thunk.

On the downside it doesn't last as long, it has more of a foam consistancy and rips with age.

So I see Euro prices of $110, anyone know where in the US that has similar ??

I've just received my seals and they have the extra lip too. These are now the only seals avaliable as the earlier style have been discontinued. I will have time to fit them tomorrow - I will report back on how easy or not the procedure is!

The new seals are so soft and flexible when compared to the fossilised origional items on the car. It really shows how time takes it's toll on these non metallic parts. It was the same with the Magnacore ignition leads that I fitted last weekend - the origional items were cooked hard into their bent shapes. I'm going to try to make it a habit from now on that every parts order I place will include some repacement rubber parts.

Cheers

dave,

ive visited a motor trimmer who trades as southbound and specialises in porsche, i was immpressed and have ordered a set of carpets from him. he will supply these as a kit including glue or fit them additionaly if required.

ive opted for the later black carpet as a change from the insipid green i have currently,

cheers,

Nick

I'm sure heard of the name 'Southbound', it's familiar from somewhere or other. Maybe they advertise in the magazines. It's good to get a personal recomendation - makes all the difference. Can you say what are they charging you for your carpet set? and did you have a choice of materials/backing/edging as well as a choice of colours?

Cheers
