This Kit that they have, does it work as good as Eric's. Can it be Blue or green ect. Eric you did a wonderful job please share your plans for the Dash lights. I looked into a place that make IndiGlo gauges for all cars not the 928. in was a $600.00 set up fee to make the molds and cutters. if that was made we could sell them for around $130.00 each. any color is possable and I like the reverse layout were the numbers glow not the face. If I had the money.. well I don't.
Keep up the good work, Britt

The kit is the collection of the required parts that were used on the earlier models of 928. They're all Porsche original parts that were used to light the gear indicators in the shifter plates of those earlier cars. Everything just plugs in like it was designed that way, because it was designed that way by Porsche. I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to get bulbs of whatever color you'd want to put in there from a local auto parts supplier.

Well....actually, if I remeber - the bulbs used for the shift indicators are the same as the one used in the ashtray. This bulb is very unique in that it has an odd base.

I'd never seen one like it before - took to every parts house in town and no one could match it. Ended having to order from 928 Specialists.

Just my humble experience.....

Hmmm... It has been quite a while since I did put those in, but I really don't remember the bulbs looking like anything too special. If you wanted some other color, you could always paint them. I've seen some sort of paint-like stuff that's for bulbs, lenses, and that kind of thing.

You've got a light for your ash tray? I don't have one, but it does look like at some time it was designed to have one. I always thought it might be something that was changed after having been used on earlier models, like the illuminated gear indicator was.

Everyone:

I checked with 928 Specialists. They do carry the kit that was mentioned for $19.70 with clear bulbs. However, at the moment, some of the parts in the kit are on backorder. I plan on getting the kit which they say is plug and play.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

For colored lights, could you use little square pieces of gel filter - the stuff used in stage lighting - fitted between the console and the light bulb to alter the light color?

That stuff's available in a myriad of colours at any photography shop.

Randy:

That's what I'm planning on doing. I just can't decide on which color.

Lightbulb

Guys,
If you are going to build one yourself you might want to consider Electro-Luminescent sheeting for the lighting instead - this is a thin, flat flexible membrane that glows equally across its whole area and is available in various colors, can be mated with gel sheets for any color you want - and can be trimmed to shape. It does require an inverter but this is prety easy. Kits are available including a battery powered inverter for ~$20-$35 depending on size, add a DC regulator for 12v use just like for the LED's - about the same power requirement as a few LED's too. It also generates no heat unlike bulbs.

I'd say its <0.5 mm thick

I got my kits from All Electronics Corp - a surplus electronics & hobby kit sales company. DigiKey, for one, has larger sheets at higher cost also.

Since I have a manual transmission the application was different - I used this kit to illuminate my "GTS" logos in my door sill plates. I guess the concept of these transparent logo cutouts was that you see the body color though them - doesn't work worth a damn when your car is black though!

It really looked like it needed some color in there - now it looks great day and night - quite subtle actually - I was worried it would look too tacky - but its good - honest... no... really!.

Alan.

Check out their catalog to see what it looks like:

Talking

Dozman & Randy,
OK here are a few shots of it. Unfortunately my digital video cam is screwed up so here are some low rez shots on my kid's camera. The "gts" is actually in a yellow tint - not quite as white as it looks here...

Here is the view in daylight conditions

Here is what it looks like in a darker setting, much less light than this & all you see is the "gts":

This is with the EL strip pulled out (you can see the yellow color a bit better here).

The clear "gts" here is reflecting the flash - without something behind it it doesn't show up much at all:

Well you get the idea.. this was the small kit size which just covers the "gts" logo. for those of you with a "928" logo you'd need something bigger.

Its wired via a regulator to the interior lights - it takes approx 300mA current - this
includes one each side of course!

If any of you were still interested in the 928 Specialist's kit, when I last check about a week or two ago, some of the parts were still on backorder.

I ordered the kit from Jeanie today, and the part that is back ordewred is a fastening clip. I figured, I can manufacture something to make it work. The wiring harness came in a few weeks ago.
