I replaced my timing belt last summer, but haven't had it on the road until recently.
I had acquired a pretty good rattle which I traced to the passenger side timing belt cover. When I took that off, I found the belt had moved to the extreme outside of the sprocket and was rubbing against the timing belt cover.
Any ideas what causes that and what I should do to fix it?
Thanks.

Possible causes that come to mind are:
Overtensioned or bad belt
Misrouted belt
Worn cam gear (check with square)
Incorrectly machined head (check lugs on front and back of head for equal heighth).
If it's the cam gear let me know as I have a used spare or two of the square tooth type.

Dennis, I think it is the cam gears.
The teeth look to be out of square, and as the belt drifts to the outside, it gets much looser - another symptom.
What do you have for cam gears ? Email directly if you like.
Thanks

Teton,
The teeth will be rounded it they were replaced with the newer cam gears and belts. The newer belts have the rounded ribs. If your belt is square and your gears are for the round belt you have a big miss match and need to replace the belt again.
Another item to check is the (for the lack of knowing the proper name) belt washer. This is on the main crank shaft and is a large washer on the inside and outside to stop the belt from drifting.
Good luck
