I'm Having the frequently mentioned "no charge below 3,000 RPM" symtom. I checked the wiring and was unable find a break. The on-board voltmeter is working properly, and I have no blown fuses. I have seen mention of a resistor that is hooked up in parallel with the warning lamp. Though I searched extensively, the only resistor that I could find was the one inside the instrument cluster that's attached to the side of the voltmeter, and a 100 ohm trimpot that's presumably used to calibrate the meter. Could someone please fill me in on where the damn resistor is located? Also, what size resistor should I replace it with to provide adequate excitement for the dynamo field? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The excitation resistor is attached to the back of the voltmeter.
The replacement resistor should be 68 Ohms, and should be a power resistor - 5 watt minimum.
Also be certain that the voltage/ignition warning light is good, as part of the excitation current passes thru it as well.
Also make certain that the alternator belt is tight and in good condition.

That’s it you found it, 100 ohms sounds right. The condition you described is probably a failed voltage regulator; remove the alt. Have it tested at any auto parts store (free).
