Looking to join up.
Hey guys (and gals). I am currently driving a 8v 944 and am toying with the idea of selling it and stepping up to a 928 S4. Can anyone provide me with the 28 side of the story as my friends on the 944 bored will likely cut their throats before converting. I am specifically looking for upkeep and maintance issues. Thanks

The upkeep and maintenence will really depend on how well the car you get was taken care of. Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of 928s out there that were not well taken care of, so if you get one of those you'd have to do some catching up. Personally I don't think the 928 is too bad compared to other cars as far as a lot of the maintenence and upkeep stuff goes. You do have to keep in mind that these are getting to be older cars though. You can't really compare the amount of maintenence and repair needed on a 15 year old 928 to a one year old Honda.
The biggest difference that you'd notice comparing your 944 to an S4 is the power. Think along the lines of a 944 turbo, only with no lag, and torque available anytime you step on the gas pedal.

I would suggest that you have any 928 that you are interested in purchasing inspected by someone who really knows the ins and outs of the wonderful beast.
I did not have a pre inspection and have paid for it with about $5000 in repairs, it now is in great shape but I sure didn't save any money <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />

I would highly recommend the PPI mentioned earlier.
The cost of repairs (if done by someone else) can be tremendous. If you can do the work yourself - it isn't quite as bad (but still adds up).
I would also echo the comments regarding the Turbo lag - or lack thereof in a 928 as compared to a 951. You'll really enjoy the extra 'umpppff' that the addtional 4 cylinders provide.

I have now owned both, had 3-944's and now an 84 928. Upkeep and maintenance are very similar but nore on a 928 because it's like two 944 motors. But the ol t-belt, water pump maintenance is the same. I think the 928 clutch job is cheaper by virtue of labor. Not all bad really. It will take me linger to do similar maintenance/perm mods than on my 951 but it is worth it. These are really unique cars with loads of personality and they really grow on you! Hope this helps
