Angry I've Struck Oil, I'm Rich! Not.

Working backward from a leak in the heater hose I noticed much oil in the V of the engine block. Upon removing the intake manifold, I find it full of oil as well. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> Not a good thing, I'm thinking. What's up with that? Can I be pulling in oil from the base of the air intake?

Is there a good detailed write up on removing the fuel rails and throttle body on a 86.5? seem things I read all point to S4.

The oil is probably coming from a leaking filler neck gasket. It's a pretty common leak.

Ernest, thanks! I read a post on the Nichols site that suggested that this might be the source of the oil. I am dumfounded as to how it got into the intake tubes however.

At this moment I am trying to figure how to remove the fuel rails so I can get the rest of the intake out. As I said earlier, most description refer to an S4 rather than the 32 valve 86, so I am hung up at this point.

It's a miracle that this car has been running so well up to this point. Porsche engineering I guess. If it hadn't been for a small pinhole leak in the heater hose I would have never guessed. So now I'm in there in looks as though I might go all the way to water pump and timing belt. Yikes!

GT,
The oil in the intake tubes comes from your crancase breather system and is perfectly normal.
As you can see from my signature I have the S4 intake also. The fuel rails should be pretty similar though.
.
There's a connection at the front and back of each rail. The back ones are under your air filter housing. You need to counter-hold one end with a 15mm wrench when you unscrew the connecting nut. Get someone to hold a sandwich bag under the connection to catch the fuel that will come out and then stuff some paper towel under the connection to catch any remaining drips.
Once you have the four connections undone you'll need to undo the two 10mm nuts on the inside of each rail. There's a square retaining clip that holds each injector to the fuel rail. These can be removed with finger pressure and the rail can then be removed from the injectors.
You'll need to replace the O rings on the top of the injectors when you replace the fuel rail and you should replace the pintle caps and lower seals as well if you remove the injectors.

Hey GT,
Hit the DIY link in my sig to get to my site. There have been three of us there that have done complete intake jobs.
Do us a favour and chronicle your own work on the site to help others out as well.
You'll find lots of pics and lots of posts on the topic. Just surf around there.

Bernie,

Thanks for the link. I'm thinking about refinishing the intakes on my 86.5 and I'm reading all the info I can find on the job.

Hey Bernie,

Whats up with all of the registrations and passwords to get into the site. Can't you make it easier to get into? Is the information confidential?

Yowser! Since this whole think started with a blown coolant hose, and since I going to have to drain the tap water out of the system that I used to limp home on, it looks like I might as well go right to the water pump, then the timing belt, plugs and plug wires and anything else that is close to breaking or falling off.

Looks like I'm off the road until autumn, but it's a Porsche thing! Right?

I'll be back with lots of question, so bear with me and many thanks in advance for all your help past, present and future. This is a great community!

Its actually an MSN site. They have a predetermined way of accessing information on the site that I cannot change. One of these days I hope to build a stand-alone site but this is the most convenient for me right now.

You need to sign up to the site to access areas like 928 Procedures. The reason is that these are downloadable documents that I made. MSN automatically requests a password for anything thats a download from the site.

Nothing confidential there. Its a site being built for all of us so bear with me.

Thanx
