But when I sat in it, I was against the roof liner big time. I did all the usual tricks and couldn't get a fit that I could live with. Bummed me out. I'm still considering revisiting this situation as I would love to have a late model XJ for a commuter mobile.
Current gen, or previous gen. I believe they got a lot roomier in the current gen, and those first models should be at about the price you're probably looking at.
My wife hates any current Jaguar. Says they look like Buicks. I wouldn't mind the current XJR myself, although the Maser Quattroporte is the one I really want.

I have had my share of British cars and currently own a 71 Triumph Stag, 70 XKE 2+2, and 96 XJ6. Cars sold- 69 MGC, 77 Triumph Spitfire, 73 Stag. I like interesting cars.
The XKE is a fixer upper which I picked up for $4.5K and it had $7K worth of parts, I can't wait to get it going. I have picked up the 3 carb setup and 4 speed trans for it. I hope to get it on the road for under $10K, won't be a show car but nice driver. The 2+2 give 4 inches more headroom. The Stag is a pretty good car, I liked it more before getting the 928. If one goes it, will be it. I have rebuilt everything over the past 17 years of ownership. The XJ6 is a nice car which looks good and drives well and are cheap to buy. I work on all my cars and admit the 928 is the most complex but the forum helps to inspire us shade tree mechanics.

My favorite car is the 928, does it all for me, power, comfort, looks, build quality, handling.

Ford bought Jaguar in 90. What they did was moderize the electrical connectors, distributerless ignition, coil on plug technology. They also worked on rustproofing and paint quality. It still has the english charm, leather, wood, wool carpets. Second to last year for the strait 6. Don't by a V8 car until 2000, problems with the Nikasil coating.
The car looks great and drives great, good bang for the buck. It is influenced by Ford but in a good way.
Cheers,
Glenn

There's a decent fixer upper just down the road from me that I've been eyeballing for a while. It looks to pretty much be all there - to my untrained eye that is. Unfortunately its an auto. If I'm going to spring for an XKE or E-type, I'd like a 4 sp.

As a kid I always dreamed of a 12 cyl Jag but as time went by the 6 cyl is a more sought after 'cruiser' for my garage.
A real Jag with Ford upgrades ...........that works.
As an old Norton rider I can relate to Lucas.............the prince of darkness.

I know a gentleman with a late model Jaguar. One day a relative came over in a Ford Thunderbird and for some reason we all wound up standing around both cars with their hoods up. It slowly started to be noticed that they were the same car, we would look at a certain underhood bit on one, walk over and see the same bit in the same place in the other car, they were the same car with different skin!
