Starting in first or second?
Hello everyone.
My 1979 Automatic had some problems with its transmission. Turned out I had the option of getting a used transnission, or rebuild the existing transmission.
After some thought and some really good advice on this forum, I opted for the rebuild.
My 79 has the "S" engine and the 3 speed automatic transmission. I took my car to the auto-rebuild shop in the middle of January. It is still there.
The rebuilding phase is apparently now complete and the transmission is in the car.BUT.....
Turns out the guy is have some problems adjusting the pressure.
He takes the car out for a testride, and it is just fine..stops the car and drives off again....This time the car will start in second.
From what he told me, I understand that the car would initially start in first.
He is now working on it again and is thinking about swapping the valve body. The original looked just fine when he put that one back into the transmission.
Just to make things a little worse..This is a Euroversion 928. The original engine was taken out and a "S" engine was put in. When the machanic did the work on this transmission he also got hold of a "valve-kit" that is supposed to give the 3 speed better pressure needed with the "S" engine.
Finally my question: Does Your 78-79 928 with 3 speed auto start in first or second?
I think mine started in first before I took it in.
I am sure it changed over twice when driving.
But then again......not so sure.
Any great advice would be grately appreciated.
Sincerely,
Geir....

Hello again.
Just off the phone with my mechanic.
Apparently the car never started in first after overhaul. Kickdown to first does not work either. It does however start in first when manually selecting first.
He changed the valvebody and the car behaved just the same.
He now claims, after doing faultsearch, that the centrifugal-regulator is not operating correctly.
I can see my bankaccount beeing drained by the hour.
Any?

I believe that second gear is the default. Have a look at this link.

Hoyo,
The governor is the primary input for an up shift, second are the shift valves in the valve body.
Check governor pressure, with the modulator vacuum line disconnected. Pressure gauge connected to the governor tap (top tap on the trans. tail)
At 0MPH car at idle in drive at operating temp. Pressure =0 bar
At partial load 12MPH (D) 0.5 0.6 BAR
46mph (D) 2.1-2.2 BAR
81mph (D) 3.2-3.3 BAR
If the values are off the governor valves needs to be cleaned, if the values are right, the valve body needs cleaning, or the sealing tube from the valve body to the trans. are leaking.
When they take the governor apart it can be assemble wrong. (No upshift.) The components should be mark. Comtaniation from the failed trans got into the rebuilt, from the cooler lines and radiator trans cooler. Not cleaned. This is going to be a reoccurring problem. The transmission, radiator cooler, Lines and torque converter must be flush.
I would say your trans starts in 1st gear. If you need more information let me now.
Good luck
