Unhappy Unique question...

After removal of my dash pod. (Very Easy, I must say, many decent write ups!) I have two wires (one-blue wire and one-brown wire), each with a female spade connector, hanging in the wind. They hang down from lower left hand side, 6" from turn signal assembly. There are no open male connectors that I can see that they connect to.

Question #1 Being, What do they go to?? I thoroughly exhausted all searches and threads here. I really would appreciate some help.

Question #2 I have uncovered behind the dash which appears to be an unused female switch connection (like the switches as in fog lights, hazards, etc..) with four wires. Any idea as what this is??

Seeing by no rubber grommets and spacers between the dash and pod someone has removed the pod before, I am just being cautious.

Thanks a million,
(Hmm, next expense, I am buying a set of manuals!)

#1 - Perhaps those wires go to the instrument illumination rheostat (dimmer wheel), that is bolted onto the lower left area of the pod?

Without looking I can't guarantee but it sounds like the wiring for illumination of the rear fog
light on Euro-spec cars.

I would venture the following guess

Q#2 - The Euro Foglight switch receptacle.

My 87 has the same type of connector you mentioned (just finished putting my Pod back together over the weekend).

I also have a couple of un-used wires in the lower left section - but they go nowhere.

A quick check of the lights and switches may lead you to discover if these are needed. In my case, they are not.

P.S. ASrew you cewrtain that you didn't 'cross' a few of the connectors? In my 87, the only wires availabe are of brown in color - not a blue or black one left over. The rheostat on the left side uses blue/black wires while the spares are of a brown color. Jsut a thought.

I appreciate the quick response. I marked all connections and wires prior to disconnecting anything. They were hanging before I disconnected anything. Both rheostats were still hooked up, when I noticed the two wires hanging.

I guess I will be calling DR @ 928 specialists for the spacers and grommets, already have a new pcb, all lights, and rheostats. I guess I should vac check the a/c circuit when it's off?? Anything I am missing when the pods off?

Doz,

When I pulled my pod, I disassembled the speedometer and cleaned/relubed the odometer gear as a preventative measure. The gear lube was dry and gummy. I pulled all of the gears and cleaned and relubed tham. Now that they are freshly lubricated, the gears have much less resistance and friction. I am hoping this little mod will prevent the dreaded odometer gear breakage.

I didn't see why you pulled your pod to begin with. If it was for speedometer/odometer work then "never mind".

Greg,
What type of lubricant did you use? Name brand, and type??

I originally pulled my pod to replace burnt out lights, clean all electrical contacts, replace the opaque paper, or remove it, replace the 2 rheostats, both are bad (tried cleaning, no help).
I have a few minor gremlins, tach works only in low, gear indicator lights went out),
Now the speedo, and vac check a/c circuit components. (my a/c is something to be desired, so need to fix that by spring)
Thinking of installing the gear indicator lights at the shifter, from 928 Specialists.

Next investment, a set of manuals, calling Jeanie @928 today!

Dozman,

I posted a odometer question on March 1st. This is taken from what I wrote then:

"I disassembled the gears, cleaned both the gears and shafts, sprayed the gears wuth a light coat of WD-40 and carefully added powder graphite (from my son's pinewood derby car kit)to the shafts.

The result is gears which turn freely and hopefully will prevent stress and breakage. I see this as a better fix than waiting for the gear to strees and break."

Please let me know how the shifter lights mod turns out. I read about it a while ago, but cannot find the info now. I want to do it also.

Doz-

Check out the vacuum system pods (in particular the Defroster as it is right in front of you just behind the pod).

Also, you might consider pulling the Temp Flap Positioner motor/unit and giving it a good cleaning (also behind the pod).

Check that the air flow tube going from the air box to the drivers door is in good shape (looks like a miniature dryer hose).

With the Pod out, a good time to check and position the mixing flaps as well.

Go for the Shift Indication in the Centrer Console - a cool fix.
