Wink 928 shocks sport bike rider

First, I don't condone reckless street racing, but there are times...

Yesterday I was taking my 928 to a local shop for a new stereo head unit and CD changer. I saw a guy on a bright yellow sport bike in full leathers go past an intersection, clearly revving his engine and making a show of it. I turned and ended in the lane next to him at a stoplight, where he proceeded to rev his engine once again. Porsches seem to have the ability to inspire motor-revving in many people... <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

I ignored him and turned down another street, only to find that he'd made an effort to get behind me. At a light he pulled up right on my rear bumper and revved again. He was clearly ready to blow past me once we were clear of the car next to me.

I'm not very good at revving and dumping the clutch, so I took off at a fairly normal clip until I hit 20 MPH or so, then punched it. The 928 roared and his sport bike screamed, I made the 1-2 shift very nicely, and I hit 60 MPH before letting off. He wasn't able to pass me, and he looked to be falling behind! I was shocked, but it was nothing compared to the way that he must have felt.

At the next light there was a car ahead, and when it took off I switched lanes to give him another shot. He stayed back, and made an effort to "hide" amongst the traffic. I turned into the sound shop and hoped he'd follow, but he kept on and wouldn't even look in my direction.

I'm well aware of how quick most sport bikes are, so please spare us all the stats, etc. This guy either a) had a bike that was all show and no go, b) can't ride worth a damn, or c) the 928 is much quicker than either he or I thought it was. I've got a G-Tech Pro and will be taking the 928 out to the track soon to see what it can really do.

FWIW, I have noticed that this annoying phenomenon doesn't only afflict those with horsepower. If I had a buck for every minivan, SUV and Escort that has revved on me, I'd own a GTS.

What is up with this? It's just plain ol' bizzare, but quite amusing nonetheless.

For me, it's more fun to watch mom gun the Town & Country than to actually participate in the "race".

How about a ford Crown Vic? I was at light with a city cop, and a little nervous that he was looking for a way to ticket me. Then, he give 'that look', like he wanted to race. Light changes, and sure enough, there's cop tires screeming and burning beside me. No emergency, he turned into the station a block later.

Uh no offense but, I would think that your sport bike riding weiner was either A. all show and no go or B. a bad rider, or C. so stunned that anyone in a car was trying to race that he forgot to twist the throttle. Trust me, the option that the car is faster than you think is not realistic.

I own and drive Porsches, and I own and ride sportbikes and I road race motorcycles as well. Porsches run and handle great and on a twisty road they can hold their own with anything including the average sportbike rider. But no street legal cars that I have seen will run heads up with any semi fast sportbike in a straight line, let alone a fast bike. Even a 600cc bike will turn a mid 10 second qtr. mile and has an honest 160 mph+ topend speed. And the liter bikes? forget it, they can push 180 on topend. I have dusted C5 corvettes (and other fast cars) on my RC51 and never had to run it hard. It will top 70 mph in 1st gear in less than 3 seconds an it is nowhere near the fastest streetbike out there.

I did see one car in Germany who the owner (a Dutch gentleman) claimed could run with a motorbike. It was some kind of British roadster with a 600 hp Cosworth V8 in it. I never got to see it run at speed but it sure looked the part. Enjoy the fact that you got to surprise the guy once. It is doubtful that he will let it happen again.

Your observation that Porsches seem to cause others to want to race is one that I also have noticed. They seem to bring out the bad boy in everyone. BTW, I love the pics of your 928, very pretty. Could I ask what you paid for it? I just found a ratty '82 and am trying to guage the value.

Cool

-Can't really remember the magazine- one of the forgettable ones on the rack at Barnes & Noble, but they did a track test with a GSXR and a Viper, and the Viper killed the bike through the corners. And one day, I ran a kid on a bike through a wide, sweeping turn in Orlando with a VW Corrado. The sport bike couldn't keep up with a V6 Volkswagen!

-I don't go around challenging rice rockets...I've ridden enough to know that they will indeed leave my shark behind in a str8 line. Those guys seem to have a taste for 928's though- I've wound up at many a gas station or grocery store talking cars in the parking lot after one has followed me in.

-In case you haven't noticed, I like talking about 928's-

I took my shark to "BikeWeek 2002", which in my opinion is incorrectly named- it implies that all bikes are welcome, which is not true. This week in Daytona has basically turned into a Harley customizer convention. If you're not on something with two enormous pushrod-fed cylinders you are not accepted.

Unless it is a 928, as I discovered! Seems bikers love sharks, and everyone was giving me thumbs up when I cruised the town. On Main Street, some kid in a Honda with a juice-can muffler looked at me and revved his engine in front of the Boot Hill Saloon. My Borla exhaust expressed its displeasure moments later, to a chorus of claps and whistles....
And then on the way home, two wildly customized Harleys came up about a meter off my rear end and hung there for about 15 miles on I95. I mean these guys could have almost reached out and touched the shark's spoiler...silly, but oh well, it's their hide. Growing pissed with the truck in front of me that insisted on doing 70 mph on the "Florida Autobahn", I dropped it a gear and hammered it- I watched their sunglasses look at each other as I disappeared.

But you know...for some reason, the ones that ALWAYS want to race are either pickup trucks or Pontiac Grand Prix! If I end up at a light with one of these next to me [especially the GP], I can count on some tire squeal. Go figure--

Anyway....

NORMY!
