Post Alternator Cowling

I am getting ready to re-install my alternator tomorrow with the new cowling. I noticed when I removed the alternator that there seamed to be some sort of gasket to seal the cowling and alternator together. Since the gasket is broken and not complete I need to make a replacement gasket. My question is what type of material is used for this gasket i.e. cork, rubber, or silicone? I have a thick rubber mat that I could cut a gasket out of, however I do not know about the engine heat effect on the gasket.

Yea,
No big deal, use whatever you like. I didn't see any need for a gasket on that piece anyway but I am sure it serves a purpose. Rubber with the approximate thickness would probably do the job just fine. Having said that, keep "heat" in mind????

The original gaskets are available:

928.603.135.02 is $6.42 (for '82-'86 plus earlier models with the updated cowl).

928.603.135.03 is $7.50 (for '87 - '95).

Thanks all of you,

I would have ordered the gasket had I of known about it prior to today, I would have 928 Specialists add it to one of the few shipments this project called for. All in the learning process.

I might just go with the silicone adhesive. Quick and simple. I think that should be enough to keep the water and road dirt out of the system.

As for Mary, she is down in North Carolina taking care of her father. He has fallen ill and needs some temporary assistance. If she is not back up here before May, she will drive up and meet me at the Sharks in the Mountain week-end. Reservations are already made.
