Kickdown - throttle linkage

This 83 Euro 3 speed auto-
No kickdown, either pedal, or bypass switch. stationery, ign on, can hear click from rear. On the road, no kickdown. Got the spider out today to check hoses etc(all ok now), and find the cable to the gearbox pretty loose. There is a metal piece back near the bellhousing that looks like it should be an adjuster for cable outer length, but it doesnt screw in any way - I pulled it and one metal end slid off the other. This produced a marked reduction in cable slack, but there is no real way to make this permanent - it can just move around and slip back together, and cable slack will return. The cable end is clipped in a bracket and there doesnt seem to be any adjustment available there.
Anyway, what's the set up I should have please? I couldnt find an adjustment spec for 3 speed in the book, assuming its done at the box itself.
BTW, the throttle plate diameter is ~ 80mm, 3.2"
TIA,
jp

JP,
Tim is right if you had a 4 speed. You though, have a 3 speed and are on the right track. It sounds, from your description like some part may have broken/fallen off of the adjuster.
The procedure is in Volume II Transmission, page 37-14. (As well as a very useful picture). Let me know if your books are missing the page, I'll give you a summary.
HTH,
Greg
