Default advice on S4 5-speed

I've had my eye out for a nice manual S4 for as long as I've been looking at 928's and it seems the ratty high mileage ones are rare enough and still cost over 10K and the nice well kept ones are even more difficult to find and they are typically over 20K. My question is, is $14k for a low mileage 87 as good of a deal as I think it is? I'm Veeeeeeery tempted. Or do you think I could expect to find a newer or nicer one at the same price for sale within the next two years?

$14k for a 5 speed 87 is a about normal. If its in great condition and has low miles then it may be a great deal. I guess it really depends on the car.

I can tell you that it has 48,000 original miles, the interior is in excellent shape but is the dark red/maroon which is a bummer but not to bad. The exterior is gold which if fine with me. It has been garaged and babied but has a few minor dings in the paint which I don't consider to be a huge negative either. So should I get this or wait 4 years and hope GT prices come down to this price? Barring Nuclear disaster I don't really see that happening. S4 manuals are rare enough, GT's and GTS's will probably always be a collectors cars unless they are really ratted out... Your thoughts??

I for one like the burgundy interior it is not as hot as black nor shows dirt like grey or other light colors. And yes you can dye leather BUT vinyl just gets painted and the paint usually easily scratches off. If you pay a couple grand more or less it probably makes little difference in the end. You could wait forever for the best deal.

Sounds like a nice 928. I think that the burgundy interiors look great on these cars.

Sounds like it is worth the money ($14k). Of course a PPI is needed to ensure it isn't a $17k 928 in hiding. If is a nice as it sounds, chances are slim you will ever find one for less money, and in the meantime you would be driving a 928.... better than waiting to drive a 928

Ok folks I'm serious here. I am ready to plop down 14k and fly my lazy *** 1200 miles up there to pick it up. I won't blame any of you if it turns out to be a lemon, all I want to know is would you buy it if you were in the market for one? And how do I post pics of it here so you can properly drool/cheer me on?

In all seriousness it's impossible to guess the price of a car without knowing it's condition both mechanically and cosmetically. I've toyed with selling my 928 on and off for the past year due to various circumstances but I would ask $19K minimum and I know my car cosmetically is in good to very good condition (not show car) and with exception to needing a vacuum system refresh (suspect leaky diaphragms) in the cabin the car needs nothing. You can use my car as a price reference if you want.

Wait around for years for a car that costs less than a new Kia to get even cheaper? How can you enjoy a car if you obsess about the cost of the most underpriced ones out there? I was also looking for a low mileage 5 speed S4, when one came up for sale I wired the money without seeing it and it's the most enjoyable car I've ever had. Owning and driving it sure beats hand wrangling and wondering how much it might cost in 4 years if I'd passed.

A gold '87 5-speed with a burgundy interior? I wouldn't change a thing. That's gotta be a rare combo.
Mileage doesn't matter that much. It's all about condition. A 160k '87 5-speed sold in these parts last week for $16k. However, that car had, in the last year had the full-monty engine work done along with a bunch of other stuff.

To post pictures: resize them to 1024x1024 or smaller and less than 149k in size and then post them via the "go advanced" button. Or pay-up your membership dues and get space on one of J.D's disks and then you can post whatever-sized pictures after you upload them to your on-rennlist-disk space.

I was thinking the same thing, I have never seen this combo.

It sounds like a good deal. Just make sure that you get that very important PPI. The GT is over rated anyway, go for the S-4, you'll be very happy

Unless you want the quickest, sportiest 928, then you would want the GT
