Towing
I have a non running car in Ohio I need to get to California. DAS gave me a very expensive quote. Any suggestions on a reliable tow company. Remember the car rolls but does not run.
Thanks

None running cars are hard to get transported and as you have learned they charge a big premium if they have to manhandle the car on and off the transporter. The truckers often restack the cars as they move cross country picking up and dropping cars along the way and that none runner just seems to always be in the way. In addition, the fuel surcharges have made all trucking more expensive. Some of the car haulers for wholesale auctions get about $1 per mile ...

I would put an ad in the local news paper out there to see if someone is on there way out here for whatever reason. See if they will tow it out for you. You could fly out there and have the car already sitting on a u-haul trailer. Just a thought.

Dan:
When I had my '33 Franklin shipped out from PA, I used Thomas Sunday (they advertise in Panorama). They are based in southeast PA near Harrisburg & the car went on the trailer first (before they loaded any other cars) & was not touched again until it was offloaded in Santa Rosa - first on, last off.
If your car is close enough to them (or could be delivered to them), maybe you can get them to do the same thing. If they can winch it on and not have to move it again, not running may not be such a big deal.
It's been a couple of years, but the tab was $1,425.00 portal to portal, enclosed trailer the whole way.

Why will the car not run It might be less expensiveto get it running and drive it home

It might be cheaper to invest the money that would be used to ship it, and get it running and then drive it? If not, I'd just call around get a bunch of quotes. We use Reliable at work on a weekly basis, but they aren't cheap. I'd guess about the best you would find to move that car is going to be at least $1500 even if it were running.

I think your asking the wrong poster i was wondering why the car didnt run, and what it might cost to fix it VS having it towed out from wherever to wherever

On a practical basis after flying out, working in less than ideal conditions without all of the necessary tools and then taking a chance something else will not break during the trip is probably more expensive than a tow. Further there is the cost of the plane ticket, a place to stay during the trip - I am just too old to sleep in a 928 while driving across country - and the cost of gas. Then if one breaks down in East Podunk, Utah you are probably looking a a bigger tow bill and a trip back home. None of these conditions are ideal.

Thanks to everyone for the tow company suggestions. I will add these to my web site.

John is going to be pretty close on his estimate with Reliable Carriers.
Fuel surcharges are going thru the roof (I know....I bought fuel for my Peterbilt this week and nearly went into cardiac arrest---$3.41 per gal here in Houston).
Look in Hemmings Motor news, PCA Panarama, CollectorCar trader, etc for carriers that can service your needs-----(enclosed, winch on/winch off, etc..)
