NEW MEMBER - Just bought 1985 928s- SOME ?'s (restore or race - RV)
Hello All,
I just bought a birgundy 85 928 s with the 32v and 5 speed. No LSD : I can't wait to drive the car for the first time...I love the solid feel in the cabin, the factory coil overs, and the rear tranny layout.... Paint is fair, roof is oxidized though.....
Anyway, when I got the car I paid about $5k-for a non runner. I went the distance though because it is a 5 speed- It's ridiculous that porsche made so many autos!!!!
Had 28 bent valves, and the heads are now rebuilt, being installed.
Had to replace the service items, belt, pump, tensioner, etc
Also replaced the injection harness and alternator/motor harness.....
Lets say all mechanical cost $5k
Now I'm at $10k...Here's my question:
Interior is all messed up- Needs about $3500 worth of leather work....Should I just rip it out and build a turbo race car? Or should I restore to like new at a cost of another $5k which puts me at $15k total for a car restored worth $10k??? What makes sense...Either way, I'm stoked! Thanks for your input...Also, I need a front spoiler if you got it.

Restore it and enjoy!
We all have more money into our 928s then what we could sell them for. The only way to get your money back out of a 928 is to drive it, enjoy it!
If you built a track car, then you would be kind of limiting yourself to track days etc, for enjoying the car. With a 928 that is restored you can still enjoy it around town with all the creature comforts and still have fun on the track with it...

Nothing about dumping money into a 928 makes sense. We're all crazy to some degree for loving these cars this much. Just keep in mind that from a financial standpoint, these cars are not a good investment ( Dave Ramsey would not approve ). From a smiles standpoint, your money is very well spent.

Ok,
First mistake was keeping the receipt or a running total. Never EVER write it down, it can be quoted and then you'll have to accept it.
Honestly, you might have paid a bit more up front than you had to for a non-runner, but who's to say when another 5 speed would come up? If it was worth it to you, then it was worth it.
Welcome to the group! Great choice of years! Where are you located?
Also, Let's see some pics. Even though the paint is faded, how about some exterior shots under low light for a little mysterious effect.
If it's running now, that's more than half the battle. I haven't gotten to my interior yet, but the running gear is good, so the rest will come with time.
Be patient, and enjoy!!! (I vote for restoring the interior but using race parts under the hood and for the suspension). This way you can drive it to and from DEs, but have a blast on the track. These cars respond well to chipping and crossovers for the exhaust. Lots of bang for relatively low investment.
PS- Set up a PM schedule and stick to it. It will be worth it.

Welcome
It seems this is the current question lately. Race or street. Sounds like it is running now drive it and enjoy. You will be able to dump truck loads of $ at any time. If you are on the fence and are doing your interior a good start might be instead of redoing the seats put in a inexpensive set of racing seats that match the interior. They save weight and look good either way. Do as much work on the car as you are capable and what you dont know ask here.

Thanks for the replies guys....I'm in Philadelphia.....
The interior of another car might work, but If I'm going to take the time to remove it all, might as well go brand new right? I'll drive it for a while like it is....And then look at performance maybe....Then interior...Whats a better setup...headers with dual exhaust or headers with x-over and no mufflers? I will post pics when she comes home from the shop... I have yet to take my first drive....GOING NUTS!

Nice!
I highly recommend visiting 928 Motorsports website. Carl has a tremendous amount of experience with racing setups and he designs and builds a lot of his own stuff there.
I don't know about headers, I don't think they're street legal over here in NJ. The crossovers have proven HP gains that you can get even with high flow cats on there. I'm using the muffler, but Carl's got a 'true dual exhaust' setup too, so it's just like the 86.5.
Let us know when you get it out on the road.

You might want to take a couple deep breaths calm down and try NOT to spend any more money make any decisions until you have put a few thousand miles on the car and KNOW what you have. Then you can decide what is the best use for the car. Like does the A/C work and is it important to you that it does. Typically there are things which you need to spend money to fix as well as things you would like to spend money "improving" .

Keep your eyes open on e-bay for interiors. When I got my '85 last year the interior was in terrible condition.
Back in January I found a complete interior on e-bay from a '87 S4. The rear quarters weren't the greatest but overall, I think I did quite well. It was $1500 and included everything (seats, dash, door panels, console, carpet, headliner, etc.) I bought it from a Porsche dismantler in Georgia and they removed it from the car and packed it in a crate for me. I opted to drive down and pick it up, but they are willing to ship.

My $.02
The 928 is a love for the car. I think of my car as a hobby. Hobbies usually never pay for themself. If you want a nice car, get your wallet out
