Smile Large brake job... almost ready to begin.

In a previous post, I explained my brake problem:

No brakes...

Since then, I figured that I would go over the entire brake system (new rotors, pads, lines, fluid, power bleeder, speed bleeders, re-paint the calipers and a new master brake cylinder) and give it a good once over and take care of other items (remove the wheel well liners, add more sound deadening material, put back liners and then undercoat the area more) that were in the area.

I have obtained some of the items already (thanks DEVEK !) and the rest are on order. In the meantime, every few days I have started the car to let her know that I still love her. Yesterday while running her in the garage, I got in and was sitting there and I checked the brake pedal. There was pressure ! Now, I am confused. What could the problem be ? Is it a vacuum thing ? I may still do all of the work... maybe. But I want to make sure that the brakes will work, they are kinda important.

Thanks for everyones help.

Rob (Mr. I bought about $800 worth of brake parts, only to find it may be a $6 vacuum line...)

Hey! Whaaatsssuuppp! I read your post, the first thing that came to mind was that your vacuum check valve was bad. It is located on the small tube coming out of the large vac hose going to the brake boost. If you need more info email me== 928porsche@comcast.net

Robert,
It sounds to me like you have a some grit in the master cylinder fouling up the seal, allowing brake fluid to pass the seal in turn causing the pedal to sink, sometimes pumping the pedal a few times will clear the problem then a good flushing is in order. I can't see vacuum being the problem, even with no vacuum the pedal shouldn't sink it would just be hard to press. This is all assuming I understand the problem correctly.

Good Luck!

Robert-
Hello again. Did you try the flush back then?

Gregg-
The vacuum check valve can do that? Mine was broken in three places, and all I lost was idle.

Greg, Eric & Donald,

I haven't done anything to the car since the initial check after the brakes went out and that only produced the fact that there were no leaks anywhere, no fluid in the car and no pressure at the time. Since then, I have been patiently waiting for all of my parts to come in (there was also a family emergency included into that time...) and they have all since been delivered. I have spoken to someone at DEVEK and they're opinion is still that it's the master cylinder that is at fault.

Now I just have to get started with the job. This will be my first big mechanical outing on the car and I want to make sure that I do everything correctly. From jacking the car on all fours to replacing the pads correctly. One thing that I have to get now are some "C" clamps for the calipers and a new gasket for the master cylinder reservoir.

I have the workshop manuals on CD and am going to print out the pages I need and I have already printed out about 40 pages of items from Rennlist, Nichol's Tip site and Tony's V1UHOH site on brake replacement. It will be an experience and one that I hope to document and put on my website that I hope to have up soon.

Thanks.

Rob,

When Pattycakes became my daily driver - I prefer 'companion' - I stopped driving the Ford pick-up,. Drove it, maybe, 10 times in 14 months.
So one day I hop in and the pedal goes to the floor and reluctantly pumps up - mushy - then bleeds down -. Also had a horrible rear main leak after the first extended run. Bought the Master cylinder & gasket but apparently seals had softened with use and the master no longer bleeds down and the rear main no longer leaks...go figure.
