Question Crickets in the Clutch

Every once in a while I hear a bit of chirping (like a cricket but very fast) in my 83 5-spd when I pass through a tunnel or next to a Jersey barrier and the sound gets bounced back to me. Over the last couple days it seems to be more frequent. I was praying it wasn't torque tube. This morning while stopped with the car in neutral and foot off the clutch I could hear the same sound. I'm thinking the pilot bearing, release bearing or something else has given up the ghost in the clutch. There is a guide tube, could that be the source? Anyway, it looks like I'll have to tear into the clutch to correct this. Even though I don't have any problems with slippage or chatter, I might as well refurbish the clutch. Any recommendations while I'm in there?

What makes you so certain that it is clutch-related?

Based on your description, it doesn't appear to be dependant on clutch operation.

Perhaps I missed something?

If you depress the clutch, does it stop?

After replacing my TO bearing, I got the crickets as well. If you can, dab a little grease on the surface of the clutch fork (were it contacts the TO bearing) through the inspection hole. This took care of my problem.

Randy/Perry,

I have had varying symptoms where depressing the clutch would make it stop, and where putting the car in neutral and releasing the clutch would make it stop. Usually doing something to the clutch affects the sound. Being at a stop this moring while it was chirping, I got a better idea of the sound which seems to be coming from the front half of the car. It does not do it all the time. It is a high pitched chirp. That makes me think it's a smaller bearing (big guess). I'm thinking there are several smaller bearings in the clutch assembly. It's the only car of the five that has ever made this kind of noise. The others are AT. I'm hoping TT is fine on all 5!

What have others experienced when the TT bearings go? I'm thinking that going into the clutch housing for now is a heck of alot easier than pulling the TT.

Perry's right. I had the same problem on my 95. It was only when my foot was off the clutch. If I depressed the clutch it would go away.
Some people will think this is bad but it got rid of my noise. I pulled the air cleaner housing off, put towels on the cool motor, flash light in hand, small mirror on a telescoping rod. I used light weight oil from Zoom. It has a really long tube to put oil exactly where you want it. "I wish I had a lift!" I put about 5 to 10 drops on the engine side and then the trans side.
It's been quiet now for about a month,,,, I did go ahead and order a clutch kit but I'm waiting for cooler weather and "a Lift"

My 5 speed does the same. If I barely touch the pedal with my foot, it goes away. I sprayed some lubercation at the posterior base of the engine on the part that moves out when the clutch is depressed. The sound goes away for a few days, then comes back. I think it is a throw out bearing or something.

I had the same chirping symptom, Throwout bearing was lunched.......came out in pieces, when I finally got around to going into the bellhousing....If you go there, replace everything.....

I have had this problem a few years ago

Make sure you change the plastic cup that holds the fork/arm that moves the release bearing as it tends to break away and its a cheap and easy thing to do with the clutch out. Also on the Euro models there is a replacement Fork, guide tube and release bearing setup which is supposed to be an improvement on the earlier version (unless it has alreay been changed)If you dont get it or dont already have it the newer release bearing will not fit properly

Also check the bearing in the back of the flywheel as this tends to breakup as well.

I have the part numbers of the newer clutch assembly bits if you need them just let me know

Thank you all for your replies. Is it easier to replace the blue hydraulic line with the clutch out?
