Post I've been pushed to the brink

After cruising with a group of 928s this weekend that had modified exhausts, I now have undeniable BWAHHH envy.

I'm seriously considering removing my rear muffler (a custom mod since there aren't any RMBs from the Big 3 for 1985-86 sharks) and possibly the cats, too.

1. Have any other 85-86 owners on this board done this before (either a RMB, cat-bypass, or both)? What did it cost you?

2. How does it sound? Is it too loud at highway speed? Again, this question is for 85-86 owners.

3. MOST IMPORTANTLY: Does anyone have an audio file of an 85 or 86 without a rear muffler that you can post or email to me? I'd prefer to know what it's going to sound like before any cutting or welding.

Thanks in advance. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" /> <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Thumbs up

I've got an 86.5 with RMB, and love it. I didn't buy the stainless model because I thought I might get tired of it and take it off in a couple of years. It has the perfect sound level for me and will stay on the car as long as I own it.

It's just right, a subtle deep rumble, but you don't really hear it much on the highway. My car was basically silent when I bought it, and I feel like it sounds the way it should have from the factory now.

There's another Houston 86 with RMB and gutted cats, and it is very loud. Be carefull messing with or bypassing the cats, from what I have heard, this greatly increases sound levels.

As far as cutting and welding, none required for RMB. The stainless bolts come off easily. It can be a bit tricky to get the RMB to align right, but it's still about a 15 minute job.

We have a bolt on cat back, with one or two mufflers (or none) for your 928 that is upgradable to a full DEVEK level 2 exhaust when ready for the jump in rwhp!

I know what Dave's going through. After hearing some of the other's we were cruising with, I, too, have serious BWAAAAHHHHHH envy. Hang in there Dave... there is a cure! <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Cool

I have an '85 S2...with a Borla exhaust.

-An S2 is a model not sold in the US. It is basically a factory hot-rodded 4.7 liter two valve with S4 power. It is quite "peaky", not really suited to US drivers.

When I bought my car, it had what looked like an aluminum sewer pipe exhaust, tipped with a simple turbo muffler. To be short, this setup RULED! It looked crude, and it was...but it worked. Of course, my car smelled like a school bus, so I purchased a cat from an S4 and since I was sick of the crude look [and because the sewer pipe wouldn't work with the cats...] I added a Borla cat-back system.

GAWD does this setup sound nice! Just the right amount of growl, yet still quiet enough that I can take my little Belgian for trips around Florida without having to worry about headaches, or having to bring earplugs.

Sorry, I don't have a sound file for you. You don't need one anyway- you already know that an uncorked 928 sounds HUGE. What you need to know is how loud a particular system is, and that is something that a sound file can't tell you.

Normy!

My otherwise stock '86.5 had the cats and rear muffler removed by the PO. The under-the-car- pair were the only thing left. THAT was much too loud for my tastes (a mild mannered country doc), so we placed a pair of 18" tube mufflers (not glass packs) where the cats were. Now it's a deep throaty rumble at cautious throttle setting in town, and it's SUPERMAN bbbbwwwwwaaaaaaa!!! on the stick!!! perfect
