Question Fuel Pump Relay - Additional Question

Ok, the 928 finally left me stranded - first time. Car died, cranked but would not start.
I suspect the fuel pump or fuel pump relay. Here is the status.

I jumped the relay with terminals 30 and 87 and the fuel pump begins to crank. The car started but only would run if I kept pumping the accelerator. I can not get over 1000 rpms. If I let off the gas it dies. I put the old relay back in and the car will not start.

I also pulled the cap off the fuel rail with the wire in place and pump running and gas shoot out strongly - fuel pump seems okay?

Would a new relay fix this problem or maybe it is the fuel pump also? What should I try next?

Also, my fuel pump relay says 931-210-01 which is the same as the LH Jetronic - cant switch them. However, this is not the number that is shown in my Parts Manual which confuses me.

Once you add the jumper in place of the relay, all the fuel pump relay issues go away. You have fuel pump running and you have enough pressure to start the car.

The pump-run signal for the relay comes from the LH brain. Consider replacing the relays, but the more common failure seems to be the LH brain itself. It would be worth your while to test ypur car's brain in a local car to see if that's the problem.

The Big Three of course offer the brains, and there's Partwerks in Chicago that offers a rebuild service. My brain is stuttering along on one bit, while the one in the car seems to be doing OK so far. So I have no direct experience with any of these options.

Best of luck!

The pump will draw about 15 amps so the jumper wire shouldn't be too small. Does it get hot when running?

Relays are cheap compared to brains.

Sounds as though both may be kaput. Jumpering the relay resolved the issue with it - order a new one.

Swap brains if someone is handy - use YOURS in their car to prevent an issue on your car killing thier brain.

Partwerks provides a quality service for a reasonable price for rebuilt brains. Give them a shout if it is the dead brain issue. Same part as others - only 1/2 price.

Actually it was a small jumper wire and it did get hot, maybe 12 guage not 18 as suggested.

Wonder if I should try it again?
