Default 5-speed non lsd fluid change procedure

I was poking around and find the need to change my 5-speed NON-LSD fluid.
The large Hex bolt is stuck what is the procedure to do this. I assume Redline 75w-90NS is the way to go. How many quarts and the best way to tackle this with out removing that top bolt.
Thanks
Mark

Well getting the hex bolt unstuck is first priority.

I used a impact hex pulled from the socket and a BFW with a cheater to break mine loose.

4 quarts of redline will do the job.

I don't remember offhand what size it was.

Someone on here had a good system for refilling that was pretty sweet! I'll look for it.

From another thread:

You might tap on it with a hammer and certainly apply some penetrating oil.

Another one listed 4.5 quarts to fill, I remember buying 5quarts but after four most of the fifth came right back out.

Yep, 17mm. you can try some localized heat. If that doesn't work you can remove the cover and then its easier to work with. The gasket is paper I believe so the cost should be minimal. I have some Schaeffer moly synthetic. I believe the weight is 75-90 but I will have to check. I had 5 gal. shipped in so I have plenty if you need some. I am not in town until Sat. so I wont be able to help you out until then if you want some of my oil.

Wow first time I heard someone else on here mention Schaeffer.

I put that in the diff for my crispy '86 auto, but couldn't get any when I went to do my 5sp.

I ordered it direct from Schaeffer. I really like their stuff.

Whater you do, make sure to FIRST loosen the fill plug, then the drain plug.

I wouldn't waste the money on the gasket unless you are already buying some other stuff. Make one or use gasket eliminator. I have some of the latter that we could use a little of.

You're right, I didn't read the entire tread.

The gasket was ~$1.20 when I bought one.

On the original one from my car Kroil, a hammer tap, and a regular ratchet worked on the fill and drain. On the replacement diff cover it took an impact wrench (and I was about to grab the torch) to get the fill plug out.

FYI, I don't know if it's everywhere, but a lot of NAPA stores have Schaeffer oil displays.
