I am currently running the standard H5 lights on my 928. I am considering upgrading the lights to H4s and am wondering if there is a discernable difference in the lighting capabilities between the 7" versus 8" H4s. I checked Ebay and I can get the 7" H4s for around $150 per set.
I tried the Search function to see if I could find the answers that I needed. Unfortunately, I had no luck. Do you have any thoughts or experience to share? Thanks in advance!

Yes there is quite a noticeable difference.
7" H4's are better than 8"H5's but only by a little...
Get the 8" H4's and you won't regret it

I installed 7" H4s which have been notably brighter than the OEM units that had the encased bulb. However, my rationale was purely cosmetic. I like the looks of the metal rim along the perimeter of the bulb!
BTW, when installing those, try to take care to note the positions of the adjustment screws. I did not and am not sure that my lights are correctly directed.

I had 7" H4's on my car and switched to 8" H4's. There's no appreciable difference in light IMO. Unless you prefer the look, sans the chrome ring, 8" H4's are not worth the extra $$. However, either one is better than the H5's, though I didn't think they were standard until the S4 model.

What better lights from any style head light? Do direct wiring from plus terminal to bulb and bulb to ground using individual fuse and relay for each low and high beam wire. Use really thick wires and good quality connectors. I think this kind of setup should have been mandatory by law but very few people have patience to do it. Difference is unbelievable compared to old and too small to begin with factory wiring in all cars. 928 is not worst possible model by any means on this regard but this setup noticeably improves lights compared to all factory wirings.

I can't speak to 8" comparos, but 7" H-4's are MUCH better than any sealed beam you'll get in the USA. You can get Hellas at your FLAPS. I paid ~ the JCWhitney price at A-Zone, IIRC. Made the 911 a lot safer to drive. And they were a direct plug-in, took 10-20 min. including getting and putting away the tools. (i.e., pick up the screwdriver, put the screwdriver down ;-)
I grew up with Marchals and Cibies, but _any_ of the Euro lensed H-4 lights are better than DOT lights.
Brightness matters but the precision of the Euro beam pattern matters much more. Want more brightness? Add higher wattage bulbs.
+1 for re-wiring, though I didn't and had no problems running higher than stock wattage.

The peer pressure!
JC Whitney ($51.99 each x 2 = $103.98 for the set with chrome ring set-up):
http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/P...?Ntt=h4+lights
928 Specialists ($269 each x 2 = $538 for the set without the chrome ring set-up):

It is hard to justify $538 versus $103.98 just to get the circumsized look
