Post Glove box won't open

Just purchased an '83 US from an auction house and the glovebox won't open. The key fits and the lock turns, the handle lifts up but no dice. Had a similar problem with my BMW (common problem on e30's) and it was a broken internal component. Fortunately there's a way to remove the lock without destroying the glovebox on the e30. Anyone had a similar experience with their 928?

I reworked the glovebox latch on mine when I bought it. Although I never had to force it open, I can tell you that there are two horizontal spring-loaded pins which hold the door shut. These left and right plungers are tapered on one side for the door to shut, much like the tounge on a standard house door. If I recall, they are plastic. Pulling up on the door handle, pulls these plungers in. You may be able to release the pins by unlocking the door latch and "jimmying" (sp) the pins by feeding a flexable piece of plastic through the top of the door, to the left and right of the latch and wiggling until the plastic pushes the pins back. You may only have to release one side and work the door a little for it to open. IF I have time, I'll post a pic so you can see what you're aiming for. It should not be that hard.

The complete latch mech. held to the inside of the door by two screws and is somewhat adjustable.

I, too, thought I had a broken latch on my 82. Turned out I had to really squeeze the heck of it and lift up at the same time. Then it opened just fine. Give it a try.

Here is a pic. BTW, pins are metal, receiver is plastic. You can see ho it would be possible, if needed, to jimmy the pins back.

Orest, I my 82 I had the same problem. I think that I took the screws out of the bottom of the door where it hinges. You will have to remove the tray under the dash to get at the screws of the glove box door. This gave me the extra wiggle room to get the latch to break free. I too had to re-adjust the latch. I still have to really pinch it together to get the two plastic bolts to what it takes to un-latch. <img src="graemlins/yltype.gif" border="0" alt="[typing]" />

Thanks for the help! Fortunately I managed to open the glove box with a well placed smack while lifting the latch. Afterwards I adjusted the mechanism and now all is well. Thank you Rennlist!
