It is almost never ever a filter problem. If you pull your filter and back flush it and find bronze metal shavings ....those were part of the fuel pump. The pump is before the filter.

I have seen filters limit power and response, but never actually stop a car running. See if you can do a fuel delivery rate check - disconnect return line at engine (across rhs cam cover), run a hose from engine side to a container, jump pump relay - should get ~1.35L in 30 seconds. If you dont get near this, replace filter and check again; if still down, replace pump? You also need to check pressures is CIS. FWIW, I prefer to change filter with whole pump & filter assy on the bench.

I'm with JP. Plugged fuel filter symptoms come upon you slowly unless you dump in a load of dirt all at once. That same load of dirt that plugs the filter also trashes the pump on the way through.

At the same time, I can vouch for the idea of carrying a spare pump with you after you get the first frozen-pump symptom. Carried a spare CIS pump in another car for four years after the symptom showed up a couple times. Once I had the spare and the tools to change it riding along in the spares bucket, the old one in the car never missed a beat. Still have the pump around here someplace, even though the car was sold a decade and a half ago. Just never know when you might need to 'threaten' a car that's misbehavin'.

Update: The Shark swims again! A BIG thanks to PAUL,who selfishly drove to my home in Loomis, from Fairfield and not only helped me troubleshoot and replace the pump, but actually donated a used pump he had in his inventory. As if that wasnt enough,he refused payment of any kind.I offered to fill his tank, and make a donation to take his Wife to dinner but he would hear nothing of of it.I just wanted to publicly acknowledge a class act and a quality guy. Thanks much Paul,I owe you one!

Glad to be of help Mark! Think of it as your Rennlist warranty for your 25+ year old car. I hate to see something I've spent so much time, effort (and $$) on give the new owner problems right off the bat. Besides, I owe thanks to Richard S. and George Suennen for donating a part to help me fix my headlights on the '89 and Brendan in San Diego for helping my son with his wheel bearing problem. There are a lot of good people on this list and I'm sure you'll get the chance to help someone out too!

Don't forget to change that used fuel filter I stuck on there while trouble shooting. No telling how many gallons of petrol have gone through that thing. As we discussed, you should probably replace the fuel line from the tank to the pump as well while you're in there. Make sure you get the proper one for a car that does NOT have an in tank fuel pump. The inlet sizes are different.

Your alignment should be OK, but the wheels definitely need to be rebalanced. I'd start there and check the alignment after that. It was aligned shortly before you bought it, but it wouldn't be the first time a shop has done it incorrectly.

Have fun!!!
