Default Overfilling PS reservoir = bad idea (Newbie autocross observations...)

I did about 10 90-second passes at a local PCA autocross yesterday. I learned a few things:

#1- if you spin a 928 with the digital dash, the oil pressure sensor sets off the 'insufficient oil pressure' warning on the screens, which also sets off a slowly blinking red warning light on the gauge itself. This recurs every few minutes and persists even after you turn the ignition on and off. When it went off I had a heart attack, but figured it was a very transient thing, and the car ran fine the rest of the day. This was on fresh Rotella 15W40, 9 qts (upper mark on the dipstick), I'd let it idle until warm before each run, by the 4th run of each session, oil pressure at idle was 2.5-3 bars. There was a ~1000 (!) foot straight on the track, I got to about 80 mph in 3rd before braking. I need to learn how to heel 'n toe better....

#2- I had the PS reservoir filled up to within 1/2" of the base of the, threaded neck, and after each set of 3-4 runs, the steering somehow felt 'overboosted' compared to cold. This was probably due to heating up the tires (which I had at 36/44 cold), but the other issue was that I spewed a few oz of PS fluid all over the reservoir, hoses, left dist cap, and coil. Made a real mess. I guess I should actually towel off the little dipstick on the lid and see where 'full' actually is.

#3- My instructors (great, both of them) both commented that I wasn't even close to using all of the brakes. By the time I was hitting them hard enough to really kick into ABS, I was missing the turn in's at the 180's (2 of them on the course) I gotta go back and get it right!

While there's a ton of downtime at these events, I stongly recommend that everyone get out there and put their car through its paces. I was probably the slowest guy out there but I bet I learned more than anyone......
All in all a great day, I've got a lot of improvin

We need to get you out to the POC short track series at Willow springs. Each day you get 5 run groups 15-20 minutes each so well OVER one hour a day on the track ! You got less than 15 minutes...but still a great chance to run the car.

Man, the oil pressure warning is persistent, every 10-15 seconds while driving. I need to disconnect the battery for a minute or two.....

Rob,

AutoX my '91GT 3 weeks ago and did not experience any of your problems. Ran about seven 60-70 sec. passes. I'm doing it again this Sunday. BTW, I'm running 38/40 tire pressures.

Rob-- two wires on the sender by the oil filter. One for the gauge, other is a switch I think.

Yeah, autocrossing a 928 is fun.
Last time I ran mine, had Toyos on it and ran them 44/41.
No problems from brakes or warnings.

Do you fill your PS with ATF? It is not flammable unlike PS fluid which burns well when it hits something hot!

Yep, Redline D4 ATF. Good to know it's not a fire risk, but I busted my *** getting that corner of the engine bay dry after the Exxon Valdez-like slick on everything when I bought it. Ah well, more garage time......
