Default Rear Hatch motor, repair or replace??

They have a replacement rear hatch assembly at pelicanparts for $150. I opened up my unit and it just has a worn plastic gear that needs replacing... But where oh where can I get an exact replacement for it? Should I try to get one fabricated at a custom parts store like this one: http://www.triteccorp.com/Index.htm. Or should I just replace the unit because it's old and might fail again soon anyway? Does anyone know where I can get one cheaper than $150? Any suggestions?
Thanks, Ryan

928 International might have a used working unit for less. You might post a picture of the worn part so we could see how bad it is. Also describe its failure symptoms in case it could be repaired.
Good luck,

The fact that a gear would wear suggest this is badly adjusted -
the way it works it should not strain at all if the hatch is not closed and you operate it.

If it does you need to move the motor up(/down) on the mounting bracket - the 2 bolts in the center support behind the tool tray... maybe if you get this adjusted right it may still run...?

At least adjust it correctly when you put the new one in...

I think you have misunderstood my problem. I am talking about a 1 inch plastic gear within the original VDO motor unit who's gear teeth have been slowly worn down over the 18 years that it has operated the way it should. It is one single plastic gear within the motor unit that needs replacing. I think you may not understand what exactly I am talking about. It's no problem, I will upload a photo here soon so that everyone can see what I am talking about. It's really no big deal because if no one can give me a cheap alternative then I'll just buy the complete motor assembly.

I think I understand exactly what you mean - my point is - it should not wear in normal use - even in 20 years... something was/is wrong with the adjustment.

I think you will be lucky to find just the gear available though... probably need to replace the whole motor as you say... $65 used or $150 new.

When you install another one make sure it cycles fully without slowing/straining when the hatch is open. It will slow slightly when the hatch is closed due to the resistance of the locking tab spring.

ok I understand what you are talking about. When I replace it I'll be sure to test it at different levels of adjustment. Thanks.
