Hey Greg,
How about using rennlist membership as a screen? Have the person give you their number before you send the list out. I may be naive, but I wouldn't think there would be a lot of abuse (even w/o requiring a rennlist number)....you wouldn't know the list existed unless you happened to be on the board/maillist and although someone COULD find out it exists, it doesn't seem too likely to me....I'm willing to take that chance. Limiting it to folks who can provide assistance may preclude some folks who's situation doesn't allow them to help out (apartment, no space, tools, etc).

I like the idea of "accepting" social calls...always great to meet other owners and can make for a welcome and pleasant break on a roadtrip.

I'm ok with but not enthusiastic about a regional only list..again, I think there's low potential for abuse and it'll require me to request other regions when I go to WI or SC...although this is certainly not a big time consumer for me it might make your/the "listkeeper's" life just a little busier.

this is a great idea.....we need to post to the maillist as soon as we decide who the "keeper" will be (I'll volunteer if you decide you don't want to do it).

thanks for taking the initiative on this!

Jim

Update:

I've been messing around with a word.doc format which looks good in Word and outlook express preview pane, but the formatting is off when viewed in Hotmail preview. Hotmail is changing the spacing. I think it's due to my cutting and pasting of the info into Word, then changing font and size. It's driving me nuts. Shawn, you'll see what i mean.

Jim, Shawn, Chris, John K.- It's on it's way to you as you have provided your info to it. Please give feedback on the look and content.

I really want something that can be viewed in a email program as well as sent as an attachment. (not everyone has word or excell on their computers, then there is the Mac crowd). If it can be viewed in a mail program, it can be printed from there.

I'm hapy to maintain, update and distribute the list, I would like ideas on a simple format to use.

Let me know,
Greg

For universal readability and email-friendliness nothing beats plain text files, a la notepad. No pretty fonts, but everything from the latest OfficeXP to a 386 running Linux can read it.

The list is a great idea, my info is on the way to you.

I'm thinking there should be seperate Eastern, Central and Western US (and Canada) lists. (big three vendors will be on each list if they send the info)

The Eastern US and Canada list now has 6 owners and one vendor.

The Western US and Canada list has one owner and one vendor.

The central US has not checked in yet.

(This is beginning to sound like election coverage!)

I think that the three seperate lists will help eliminate abuse of the participants. If someone is travelling out of their region, they can certainly get a destination list, but what's the point of having the name and contact info of someone 1500 miles away if your not likely to go there?

Thoughts?

Thanks to those who have added their info to the list.

Down to 2 lists:

Eastern/Central US and Canada (8people)
Western US and Canada (1 person)
Combining the list for participants who want both is not a logistical problem. I could simply send both.

I've tweaked the lists and have re-sent them to the 9 participants as a .doc and .pdf attachments.

If I send it in the body of a email message, there's no good way to ensure the formatting and spacing will show properly in email preview and hotmail/yahoo type email programs and still allow it to be printer-friendly. (printing it is the whole point, anyway). Sending the attachments will work best, I think.

If any of the people who are on the list have trouble opening or reading it, email me. I'm also looking for more feedback on the style, content, etc.

I'm still looking for more people to get on the list. This can be a valuable tool if the unexpected happens far from home.

We also need to discuss if the list should be for participants only, or open to owners who choose not to add their contact info. Those on the list should decide who gets the list. Chime in please.
Let's get it settled.

This is a great idea. I've just sent my info but I did not include my Rennlist number. One recommendation would be to list resources (tools, manuals, tensioner, etc) and experience with particular MY's.

Dennis,

The list is basicly a two colum list. Left is name and contact info, right is resources/comments section. Your info will be added and a copy will be on it's way to you. If you see anything you would like to see different with the format or info, please let me know.

Same for others who have emailed info this weekend.

Once the format is set, adding and updating info will be a breeze for me to do and up-to-date lists will be sent regularly.

Quick poll- Is there anyone who wants to participate who can't handle a .pdf (adobe acrobat reader)? I'm going to ask the current participants directy, but I'm hoping more people participate, and I'm looking for guidence.

I'd prefer to email it .pdf exclusively. If I send someone the microsoft Word .doc and they don't have the word program, wordpad opens it and it looks like crap. At least with a .PDF it will display as it was intended. It is the most printer-friendly format to use.

Acrobat is a free download and my guess is most people have it by now, or can download it.

I'm trying to not snail-mail copies because of what I hope to be frequent updates of the list as people add to it, and the ease of emailing up-to-date copies to the participants.

any thoughts? Post them here or email direct at

Greg,

PDF's are fine with me. For those of you that don't have it, the following URL shoud take you to a free download. BTW you can use it to download 928 Internationals on line catalog.

PDF is fine with me. actually just about any way you want to send it is fine. Will be down there in WA on Sept' 1. Going to have another child in two or three weeks. Got to be present for that and the wife likes to bite people during child birth. She left some serious marks on my shoulder where she bit me the last time. Got to get me a dog bone or something to shove in her mouth this time around.

Cheers and cigars all around!

Don't know what flavor it is yet. First ultrasound said girl, second said maybe boy, and a third required cash out of pocket unless medically nescessary. Rather spend that money on clothes, diapers and 928 goodies and wait for the results. Yep love bites kind suck when they leave 1/4 inch imprints.

Updated lists have been sent. Let me know what you think.

Thanks to those who are spreading the word about the list. Many additions have been made. It's interesting to read the "resources" section. (Tony, wherever my car breaks down, I'm having it towed to a highway near Vegas & giving you a call!!)

Greg....you've got my info now. My "resources" info (aka 4 spare wheels with tires) will be true once I get them back from a nearby Rennlister I imagine they might come in handy for those shark owners that removed their spares to install subwoofers and fall victim to Michigan's urban roads.
