If someone else could replicate them (steel /alloy) and take this over - I could send one (fully finished) as a model.

Hi Alan, and all. I haven't wanted to step on JP's toes in this project with the pawls that I had been working on, which is only one of the reasons I haven't finished up on those, and perhaps the seperating devise as well. If JP isn't going to be able to do these any more I'll put my project back on the burner and try to finish it up, both the devises and the pawls. I'll be happy to make the pawls available on the same basis as you guys have been doing except mine will be fully finished, They are being made out of some 7075 T6 aluminun bar stock I have which I think is more than adequate.

I'll try to finish up some of these in the next few days and let you know how I come out. I'll also try to get the pieces of the devises finished and anodized so I can get those distributed around the world for loan purposes as well.

I wont need one of your's and JP's, Alan, as a model since I am using one of the nylon ones that is broken to reverse engineer and also the hole they go in.

Randy, if your gas cap does not need to be rekeyed, why don't you just send it to me and I'll put a new Pawl in it and send it back?

My locking gas cap no longer is.

I do have a good used one that I could swap out the locking mechanism.

Should I install the fix it part while I'm at it?

Well I have these found again... I've actually had them for a good while from John but they got lost in some garage turmoil... and at this time of year the garage is usually a 130F+ inferno... I've been putting it off but now have located them after tidying the whole garage out - and discovered by process of elimination that they must be lost somewhere else. Finally found them in the house!

I'll be working through these based on the existing requests first.

I had contacted Randy a while ago and he was considering a Jerry Feather version... Assume you don't need one - will send out PMs on this to the list I have - If you don't get one in the next day but expect to be on the list ping me.

Rod,
All I have left are 2 unfinished ones - these need a hole drilled and a slot cut to match your broken Nylon version, so you have a template. A little work but very easy if you have a drill press - more fiddly if you need to drill by hand - but certainly doable, the rest of the work can be done with a hacksaw and square profile file.

The hole depth sets the ratchet spring tension - I prefer slightly less than factory tension (deeper hole) to preserve the white part of the gas cap better. We are now ratcheting mild steel against it rather than nylon - add some lubricating grease too (something that won't dry out).

If you want to proceed let me know your name address and email by private message. Paypal $10 to me for shipping/packing for the unfinished ones with a recommended $5 donation to JP who originally had these cut on a waterjet (I'll send the details). I only have 2 left - so Rod you have one if you want it and the other is Randy's if he wants it - I'll check.

Right now I have my mill set up to flute and/or hex the Coolant Level Sensor/Sender Caps that I had machined for that conversion project. When I finish those up and can get to it I'll try to set up the mill and finish some of the jar of pawls that I started too long ago. My pawls will be fully finished.

My gas cap is still ok but I guess it ison borrowed time now, it is a '79. Are you planning on running a next batch?

I am not sure just how to respond to these last two inquiries. I haven't yet completed even one "batch" of the pawls I am devising out of aluminum. I do notice each time I look at the small jar of pawl blanks not yet finished that there does not seem to be all that many--I counted 56. In setting up my mill to finish them I won't need to devise much if any tooling or jigging to do it with, but each set-up will take some care.

I have basically three steps to complete these pawls. One double step is to mill the top of the pawls narrower to fit into the opening for them, then to cut the opening or slot in the top where the bottom of the lock inserts to move them fore and aft, then the hole in the bottom for the spring, and that will take two operations, one to drill the hole and another to flatten the bottom of the hole with a small mill cutter.

At this point my plan is to go back with some basic material and mill out some more blanks so that there will be many more in this "batch," maybe 120 to 150. Then I'll do the finish milling a step at a time with the entire batch and hope to end up with enough to send a small quantity around with each of the cap tools I am still not finished with, but when they are finished.

Then I guess that will leave us at the same place we might be now with the question of what am I going to do about replenishing them when any given small quantity is used up. I think it will be kind of like the door shims with me making some more if I am still around and able.
