Well better news
OK so tally so far 5 made it (more or less OK...) , 1 became one with the sorting room floor and 1 other is yet to be accounted for...
I've switched to padded bags with cardboard inserts for
"Round 2"... - 6 more pawls went out today
A replacement out to Jake, and new pawls to Rob(2), Neil, Trenton & Stan
One more to go out pending details...

Gas Cap Seperation Tool
I had actually made the Gas Cap Seperation Tool suggested above by Alan, but probably not because of his suggestion, since I don't remember reading this thread before, but based on my own intuition. Nevertheless what I had come up with is just about exactly what Alan describes. However, I was not able to get it to do the job I hoped so I set it aside and went on to something else.
After looking at this thread this morning I decided to dig the tool out that I had made before and see if I could do some refinements to it and get it to work. What I did was trim the points of the three fingers a little and then deepened the tool a bit and then forced it into position lined up with the three locking lugs and squeezed it together in my mill vise and with my vise grips unti it was tight. Then I used my heat gun to heat the three areas of the sides of the red cover and then tapped on the chrome lock and pow, it came apart.
Then I was able to see much better where the tool needed further refinement and then did some more to it.
It still takes a little bit more force the get it to work and I still need to use heat to get the red part to ralax enough to release the white part, but I think I can make the tool a little bit deeper so that when the lugs release there is room inside the tool for the white part to move away from the lugs, which I don't think I have right now.
Anyway with very little effort, even with this first itteration of the tool, I took three of my caps apart and didn't need three hands.
Then I find that the heat gun can be used again to heat the red part and massage it back into its original round shape.

Jerry - Yes thats pretty much exactly what I had in mind...
Great job making one - its the kind of job you only normally expect to have to do once... but then again maybe not...
Great tool for loan (rental) use. Until you've tried to do it its hard to understand the frustration of not quite having enough hands - four would be about ideal I think...

Well, after waiting about 2 months for an uncharacteristicly non-responsive Alan (not expected from a class act like him)... I went directly to the source.
The part looks excellent and while there is additional hand work to do, it is an impressive piece!
Thank you John for your development of this worthwhile fix!

I do still have some left - about 8 more right now.
An interested party wanted to know more about the blanks - here's what they look like - if you've been reading along you know you need to do some work - drilling the spring hole in the end opposite to the teeth and cutting the cam slot - which can be drilled with a larger drill in a drill press, or cut with a hacksaw/file or dremmeled out or some combination of these.
In the photos there is some glue residue on one side and on the end - I keep these taped down to cardstock to keep them found... so this will wipe right off with some IPA.

PM me with your name & address and I will reply with paypal payment details.
I used to send these out for free - I can't do that anymore so it will be $5 shipped anywhere in the US - postage & packing is usually most of this cost.
I also ask that you make a ($5 suggested) donation to JP who actually had these made and shipped them to me - I had agreed to distribute them for him across the USA. This is not really a moneymaking scheme for anyone - but its a nice gesture for someone who did this for other owners benefit.
If you've ever tried accurately shaping mild steel into complex shapes - you will know $10 for a one off is a screaming deal. I will send details of JP's paypal details also - that part is on the honor system. JP send me any changes to your paypal OR confirm its still the same please.
