PSD is an electronic/hydraulic Limited slip. Porsche put them in the 959, and the 928 with MY 1989 (I think). For sure it's on the 1990 MY, cause I had to fix mine. YMMV.

I like the effect when coming out of a corner on hard throttle. Basically, it feels like the rear of the car can be power steered.

The last year of the mechanical LSD is 1989. The first year for the electronic PSD is 1990. The LSD is pretty much a no maintainence item. Mine is still plenty "tight" with 80k miles on it. The PSD requires an involved fluid change from time to time or it could fail.

I do track my car so, while out shopping for a 928, the LSD was a must have item. I would not have bought a car without one.

Good info and insight. Thanks to your tips and explanations, my decision is now an informed one.

Now, to find one of those "limited" limited slips at a "reasonable" price...
Take care all. D

Derek: Were you bidding ebay, on the LSD from Parcars? I was there but not going too high as I didn't ask the mileage on it; There is a '79 gear box going off today around noon EDT, says it has 70,000 kilometers on it w/LSD. If anybody finds a source for new item that fits our cars let us know.

LSD is the one big addition I plan to add to my car. I am curious about the installation since the pinion is part of the transmission. It's either a very complicated install, or very easy. My guess is that the halfshaft bearings can be removed and the ring/carrier can be placed in without disturbing the pinion. Oops, wrong. Unless the pinion can be adjusted easily. Well, if anyone has experience with the 928, I'd like to hear it.

Hi Steve,
That is the one I was watching. However, I was less than enthused with PAR901 's feedback. Most of the positives were from a small group of bidders for purchases (not sales) that PAR901 had made for very inexpensive items (old print ads and the like). There is lots of negative feedback for PAR901, who has only been on ebay since last September.
I did ask a few questions, such as mileage of the donor vehicle. No response, two times.
Not the kind of stranger I want to send money to.
I wouldn't mind getting a used one, however, I have been told that the '79 will not work on our cars without some serious work. You and I need an '84-'89, I believe.
FYI: Rennlister Brendan may still have one, but he wants a little more than I wish to spend at this time for a used unit. D

Picked up a used ($1000 US) LSD to put in my '86.5, had it refreshed (it was rather used ) and installed by my mechanic.

If you don't know what is involved in installing a differential correctly, have it done by someone who is both knowledgeable and experienced. Getting the ring&pinion mesh correct is both difficult and important.
