Default Wheel confirmation needed!

Greetings,

I have a 1986.5 928 with stock chrome wheels.

I would like to install a set of 993. There is a set on ebay with ET55. Im told they will fit in the front, but I would not be happy with the results in the rear.

Please let me know what you think!

front is 7 in wide w/55mm et. Tires on front are too narrow (215's). Should be 225 at least.

rear is 9 in wide w/55mm et.

you will be OK on fitment with these.

I am no fan of used tires, no matter how well they are described in an ad.

I purchased my 19 inch 997 wheels/Toyo tires from Wheel Dynamics (in LA) and have been quite happy with them.

FYI---

your car can take as big as:

19x8 front 67mm ET
18x10 front 67mm ET (but may require some fender mods)

19x11 rear 67 ET (requires a 1/4 inch spacer and slight rolling of the fender)

In my opinion, there are better "deals" out there.....

If you care more about looks, a nice way to go. If you care more about handling and steering feel, the 7x17 et55 front is not that good. Too narrow and wrong offset.
New 997/987 take offs will be 8" et57 fronts which is better. But the rears are either 9" (987, best I think), or 10-11" (997) which are big enough to give you a good amount of understeer in corners. Ideal would be the same wheel all around.
It takes a while to understand 928 wheel choices and what they do to handling, so take your time buying shoes for the '28!!

I have a 9.5x18 et68 front that is the max you can go without fender mods.

I think Carl is definitely on to something with the same front/rear tire sizes. It makes sense conidering the cars weight bias unless of course you prefer understeer.

Carl are you running the same pressure in front and rear?

one further note:

when I made the switch to the 19's, I lost 44lbs of unsprung weight.

say what you will about weight loss and how to get it, but anytime you can lose unsprung weight, it's a good thing.

and if you are more concerned with steering and handling, the 19's are a great package----they look pretty good, too.

Russ, I would not think that the 19" would be any lighter than the slotted wheels. Have you put them on the scale?
This site http://www.944racing.de/reload.php?u...elweights.html has Porsche wheel weights. By that info, the slotted 7" wheel is 18.5 lbs; hard to beat that. For you to lose 44 lbs by wheels alone (not the tires) I don't think it could be done.
Afshin: I run like 2 psi more up front, the front is a little heavier than the rear. Understeer can be affected by running different swaybars or adjustable drop links, and by ride height and alignment settings.
Less psi means more traction up to a point. There have been threads on this, so you could search for more answers.

my original wheels (when I bought my Euro) were 993 cup style wheels off a 944 (they had a 944 part number).

they were 16x7's with 225/60/16 cheapo (Discount Tires) tires on them.

put each of them on the scales at the office, got weights for shipment, then compared the weights to the 19/Toyo Proxies I got from Wheel Dynamics in LA.

44 pounds lighter for the 19/Toyos.

And no, I don't have an understeer issue with the 19's.

I took it to Texas World Speedway just after installing the 19's, and what a difference it made. No under or oversteer, just flat as a pancake through the turns at any speed. (Had the boys with me in the car----didn't want to do something really stupid like spinning out with them in the car, although they would have thought it pretty cool to go "drifting" in the Porsche)

It would be unusual to go from 16" to 19" and drop so much total weight. Usually the smaller wheel setups are the lightest, and racers only run just large enough to clear their enormous brake packages.

I'll be swapping out my OE 16" flats on the S4 for 18" Carerra III's - I'll try to get a before/after weight to test the concept. I suspect I won't lose any unsprung pounds, though I'll gain in the traction department.

My '88 runs ET55 17's with a 17mm spacer on the rear.

The '90 runs the same wheels with a 21mm spacer and rolled fenders.

They will be fine.

I do like the looks of the 993 cup style. I like the price. My stock wheels needs tires anyway.

But then again, I want performance. Loads of it. I did read somewhere that anything over a 17" wheel is not recommended for an 1986.5. But then things have changed since 1986.

My thoughts are to purchase the wheels/tires. This will get my 928 up and running and looking good;(...then latter (depending on the elections tommorrow) I can get quality wheels for my 928.

Please forgive, I like to think Im informed prior to purchase....but, to be honest, the whole thing makes my head hurt lol

Uhh... your scale is wrong. The 16x7" slot wheels are very light for Porsche wheels. IIRC they're 17lbs. They are forged and thin. The wheels in your avatar are well over 20lbs and cast. The wide 19" tires to match would weigh the same or more than 225/50-16s. It's likely that you gained 44lbs of unsprung weight.

There are people with 11" wide fronts. You just need a lot of camber and lose some steering travel.

You probably found one of Ed Ruiz's posts referencing Porsche not recommending 18" tires on anything that didn't originally come with 18" tires. 18 and 19" wheels are fairly common on 928s and there are even a few with 20" wheels.
