Post Ignition- door lock key

I only received 1 key when I purchased my 1985 928S and really wasn't worried about this until today.

I live in Los Alamos NM and both the local locksmiths told me they couldn't touch it, so I went to Santa Fe and contacted the 3 best locksmiths in town with the same results, the last locksmith even tried Albuquerque and was told that I could get one in either Denver Or El Paso

Is there a better/quicker way to get a key than this?

John-

Try 928 Specialists - they will need proof of ownership and your cars' VIN.

For a 3 week wait - and about $30 you can get a new key from the factory. Also ask for a valet key while you're at it.

The 928 key is extremely hard to duplicate due to the unique cut on it. Some have gone directly to the dealership only to be met with frustration. Jeannie will take care of you though with limited problems.

In the mean time - NEVER leave your key in the ignition and close the doors with the windows up! A real PITA to get back into the car if this happens and the locks actuate (btdt!).

John,
Same problem - do you have locking lugs and NO key, too?
There may be other ways but,
928 International Ph# 714-632-9288,
E-mail: mr928@928intl.com or http://www928intl.com
will make a copy of your key
with alarm - $25.00
without alarm - $35.00 - go figure...
They also offer a catalog with tons of stuff some prices are high some low.
engines body parts, glass, switches, harnesses, wheels ...........

John - I had a key made by a guy named Tony Euganeo, his shop is in Philadelphia PA. You mail him your key with return postage enclosed and he makes as many copies as you can afford. I was worried about getting my original key lost in the mail but he said he does lots of these without any problems. I'll send his address and phone number when I get back to the office.

As a side thought on this.

If you should have to send your key - be certain to insure the key (both ways) for at least $1000. That way if it gets lost - you will get enough from the indurer to cover a full set of replacement locks (including the gas cap).

John:

Obviously you, like me, can't send your key away while you wait for a new one if your 928 is a daily driver like mine. So, I contacted my local P-car dealer for a new key. The price for a new alarm key was a whopping $60. After about a two week wait, the new key arrived. However, when I tried it out in the dealer's parking lot, it didn't work. Porsche had cut the grooves in the new key too deep. That was about 10 days ago and I haven't heard anything since then.

My suggestion: Use 928 International if they can send the new key with only your VIN. They'll probably get the key from the same source as a P-car dealer, but I'm guessing that 928 International will take better care of you. I didn't get much attention while at the parts desk because the guy standing next to me was paying his $9,000 repair bill in 10s, 20s and 50s.

When I first got my 928 I had the dealer get me an extra key - took about 3 weeks and was quite expensive.

Got my next key from 928 intl, less than a week and only about 1/2 as much.

Both required proof of ownership and vin #.

If I'm correct; Tony Euganeo (see PaulD post) made a duplicate ($25.00) for me at a Porsche local (VA) swap meet. I have since misplaced his card. However, I do recall him being from PA.(that's why I think it may be him).

Here in Riyadh, with only one dealer, there are no options on key sources. It took them 6 weeks or more, $80, and key number (from the original paperwork). At least it worked though. How do you stop the crest falling out, and the head opening spontaneously ?

John:

Apparently the guy with the wad of cash had done it before. The girl at the reception desk was griping about the last time he did it for a $3,000 bill. Now, what type of career leads a guy to pay for everything in cash....large quantities of cash?

I think I responded to this post in a 928OC e-mail.Anyway I had working copies made by a local Mercedes-Benz Dealer. The Porsche Dealer farmed the job out to the Benz dealer.I don't know if our keys are similar to M-B keys but I had duplicate keys the next day.Try your local Benz Dealer.

MB keys are different (depends on year), but are multi-axis cut kinda like our keys, so it would not surprise me that the MB folks wold be able to do it.

As to the gentleman paying cash, I'm sure he was a bartender...
